AND HENRIETTA HOYLE
Leeming Hardwick Greaves (46) was
born about 1889 in Bradford, Yorkshire, and died (under the name Hardwick) in
the first quarter 1957 (aged 68 years G Records 7C 131) at Blue Anchor,
Exmoor. He married Marie Louise Maud
Helen Norgate in third quarter 1928 at Stockport (near Manchester), England[2]. She died in May 1957 in Brisbane, Australia,
about 3 months after the death of Leeming, to whom she was still married.
Both Leeming and Marie were
professional musicians. She was a
violinist, and he played the piano and also conducted the orchestra at The
Theatre Royal in Hyde. This is where
they met.
Leeming had a relationship with
Kathleen Korner, and they lived together using the name Hardwick. Kathleen changed her name by deed poll to
Hardwick before giving birth to a son, Richard Hardwick. They never married, and Leeming remained
married to Marie all his life.
A daughter, Jessie (Greaves)
Sichter, posted the following on the Francis Frith website at www.francisfrith.com
on 4 June 2006, about her wartime memories in Holcombe Rogus, Devon.
“1942 War time in Holcombe Rogus
I lived in
Holcombe Rogus during the war years. My Father Leeming Greaves and Kathleen
Korner had leased the Prince Of Wales Hotel. My brother Joseph and I attended
the local School, I was 9 years old at that time. My Teachers name was Mrs
Berry. Mrs Berry had a son Roger who spent a lot of time with my brother. It
was a very busy time in Holcombe Rogus as the American servicemen had arrived,
and were stationed there, I think there were about 200 at the time. The
Americans were very good to us as children, and were always giving the children
their chocalate supplies. The Prince of Wales Hotel was very busy, with Jeeps
turning up day and night. Now living in Australia, I returned to Holcombe Rogus
in 1990 and found the Hotel was still trading, even the Bowling alley at the
back of the hotel was still operating, with the same old Bowling balls that we
used to play with. My Mother Louise Greaves was a Violinist and had several
students in the area. She also had a lot of friends, sorry I cannot remember
names, but would remember if they were mentioned to me. I did not find that
Holcombe Rogus had changed much in all the years, as with a lot of the English
villages, anyone returning there would be happy that it still looked the same.”

[1] Although the surname appears as Labum on the marriage entry for William and Elizabeth, that was written by the clerk. According to R‑3, she signed her name as Labron. Also, in the 1851 census, Ann Labron is shown as a visitor in the home of William and Mary, and she may have been Elizabeth’s mother.
