DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM L. GRAVES AND JANE ANN ELIZABETH VARNELL OF WASHINGTON, DC

GENERATION 1

William L. Graves (1) was born about 1828 in Georgetown, Washington, DC.  He married Jane Ann Elizabeth Varnell, daughter of George Washington Varnell and Mary Ann Catherine Gibson, on 3 Aug. 1857 in Washington, DC.  She was born 6 Oct. 1839[1] in Washington, DC, and died after 1900.  William was in the 1850 census for Georgetown, Washington, DC, 22, tanner, with no family, living with R. Colburn, tanner, and his family.  They were in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Washington, DC.  He was a tanner in 1850 and 1860, and a house carpenter in 1870.  It is not absolutely proven that he was the father of John Edward Graves, but no other John or Edward Graves has been found who fits as well.  John was listed as James in the 1860 census.

The 1870 census did not show the first 3 children listed below.  It seems strange that these 3 children seem to have been born before Jane and William’s marriage.  However, in the 1900 census for Washington, DC, Jane stated that 5 of her 8 children were still living, so perhaps these 3 children did die by 1870.

It is possible that William was a son of John and Sarah Graves.  They were in the 1850 census for Georgetown, DC, as John Graves, 56, shoemaker, Sarah, 57, Ann, 25, and John Jr., 32.  John and Sarah were both born in MD, and their children born in Georgetown, DC.  (R‑2)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM L. GRAVES (1) AND JANE A. E. VARNELL

John Edward Graves (1) was born about 1859 in Roanoke, VA (according to family legend, and his son's birth certificate), died in Aug. 1927 in Chicago, IL, and was buried in Evergreen Cem.  However, all census records seem to indicate he was born in Washington, DC.  He supposedly owned his own business, and he always worked as a butcher.  He married Margaret Falvey about 1886 in either VA or Washington, DC.  She was born about 1862, probably in Washington, DC, died 31 March 1910 in Chicago, IL, and was buried at Mt. Olivet Cem., Chicago, at age 47.  She supposedly died from heart problems.  She was supposedly Cherokee Indian.  Her son's birth certificate says she was from Washington, DC.  They moved to Chicago, IL.

A Chicago city directory showed Edward living in Chicago at 4709 Princeton Ave. with 2 brothers and a Lynch family.  Edward was 15, John was 19, and William was 20, all born in IL.  It is suspected that Florence Lynch was their sister (confirmed by the 1910 census).  When Margaret died, she was buried on top of an infant baby Lynch.  L. L. Lynch paid for the plot.  The 1910 census for Chicago, Ward 30, Cook Co., IL, listed Florence Lynch, 24, head of household, with her daughter Florence, brother-in-law Lawrence Lynch, 25, and brothers Edward, William, and John Graves, all the Graves siblings born in DC.  The family (probably the Lynch family) was of Irish descent.  (R‑1)

Daiger and Mary J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She had first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Sabin, and he died by the 1910 census.  She was born in 1884 in VA, and died 24 May 1958.  They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Brentwood, Prince George’s Co., MD.  He was a house painter.  (R‑2)

Children - Graves

  14.  Willis Graves, b.c. 1910 (VA).  Although he was listed in the 1920 census as Willis Graves, son, 10, he was not a son of George.  The 1930 census showed him as Willis B. Henderson, step-son, 20.  The 1910 census for Cople Dist., Westmoreland Co., VA listed Frances S. Henderson, 23, widow, living with her parents, Charles E. and Mary J. Daiger, and their grandson Willis B. Henderson, 7 months.

  23.  Florence Lynch, b.c. 1904 (IL).

Edward Thomas Graves (13) was born in Oct. 1898 (or 1893) in IL, died in Sept. 1951 in Chicago, IL, and was buried in Evergreen Cem., Chicago.  The family says he was walking back from somewhere and got clubbed in an alley, but the coroner's report said he died of heart trouble and pneumonia.  He married Barbara Zuerker, who was of German ancestry.  They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Chicago, Cook Co., IL, with all children born in IL.  Both censuses gave his wife’s name as Elizabeth, born about 1911 in IL, with both her parents born in Germany.  (R‑1)
