John Graves (or Greaves) (1) was born about 1817 in Coningsby
(or Tattershall), Lincolnshire, England.
He married Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1819 in Fulletby,

Linc., with their name spelled Greaves.
They were in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for High Toynton, Lincs., with

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (1) AND ANN ------
Joseph Graves (2) was born about 1842 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. He married Harriet Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1846 in Haxey, Lincolnshire, and may have died by 1881, since she wasn’t in the household that year. They were in the 1871 census for Wroot, Lincs., when he was an engine driver for threshing. He was in the 1881 census for Epworth, Lincs., living a couple houses from James Graves, 66, born in Epworth, his wife Annie, 58, and their 2 children. It seems very possible that James was his uncle, and Harriet had died. James and his household could not be found in earlier census records.
Children – Graves
12. John George Graves, b.c. 1871 (Wroot, Lincs.).
Robert Graves (4) was born about 1846 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. He married Hannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1847 in Barton, Yorkshire. They were in the 1891 census for North Bedburn, Howden le Wear, Durham, when he was a fitter at the sanitary pipeworks.

13. Mary Ann Graves, b.c. 1874 (Coundon, Durham).
14. Amey A. Graves, b.c. 1877 (Eldon, Durham).
15. Ester Graves, b.c. 1879 (Hunwick, Durham).
16. Walter Graves, b.c. 1882 (Hunwick, Durham).
17. John R. Graves, b.c. 1885 (Witton, Durham).
Herbert Fletcher Graves (1), probably called Fletcher (since that was the name in all the census records), was born about 1851 at Chapel Hill, Coningsby, or Wildmore, Lincolnshire, England. He married Sarah Wright. She was born about 1850 in Chapel Hill, Boston, or Langenville, Lincs. They moved to New York, Lincolshire about 1860. The family story is that sometime after 1860, he changed the family name to Greaves after having an argument with his brother over a will. Herbert and Sarah had their childen after their surname change. However, the census records show that the spellings Graves and Greaves alternated for both Fletcher and his father John in census records. They were in the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses for Wildmore, Horncastle, Lincs., with the surname spelled Graves in 1891 and Greaves in 1881 and 1901. He was an engine driver in 1881, an agricultural labourer in 1891, and a warehouse seedsman (?) in 1901. (R‑1)
