DESCENDANTS OF SARAH GRAVES
AND WILLIAM GREGORY OF VA
GENERATION 1
Sarah ("Sally") Graves
(1) was probably born about 1740-45[1]
in VA, possibly Caroline Co., VA, based on the birthdates of her husband and of
her children. She died about 1783 in
Erwin, Washington Co., TN.
It was previously believed that
Sally might be a daughter of Beverly Graves, partly because of the name Beverly
being used for a son and a couple of grandchildren. However, since Beverly Graves was probably born about 1750, it
seems very unlikely that Sally was his daughter. She may have been his sister, and their father may have been John
Graves.
She married William Gregory, son of
Philemon (or William) Gregory, about 1760.
He was born about 1736 in VA, and died in 1806 in NC. There was a William Gregory who was bound to
Thomas Dillard, Jr. in Dec. 1759 in Antrim Parish, Halifax Co., VA. However, that was probably another person,
since the person bound to Thomas Dillard in 1759 was almost certainly a minor,
and also William Gregory married the next year in 1760.
On the other hand, the William
Gregory who married Sally Graves was certainly connected with the Thomas
Dillard family, and, based on the birthdates of the children, William could
have been born later.
After Sally died, William Gregory
married Fanny or Elizabeth, probably about 1785.
It is believed that Sally and
William lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
William may have moved west to
Montgomery Co., VA (to a section later to be cut off into Wythe Co.) by 1782,
for, according to genealogist Worth Ray, it was in Oct. or Nov. of that year
that he moved from there to the Watauga country (in what is today Unicoi Co.,
TN) with a group of settlers which included Capt. Thomas Dillard and the Love
brothers, Robert and Thomas. The three
families were to become further connected by considerable intermarriage.
A biography of William's son,
William Jr., states: "When but a boy, young William's parents moved to
Washington Co., TN. Soon after their
arrival, his mother died. About two
years after this sad event, his father married again, and soon after moved to
North Carolina where he passed the remainder of his days as a local Methodist
preacher. He died at the age of seventy
years."
In 1786, William received a land
grant (no. 712) of 96 ares at the rate of 50 shillings per acre in what was
then Washington Co., NC. (The area went
through several civil jurisdictions before evolving into the present Unicoi
Co. The records of William's era are
housed in Washington Co., TN.) His name
appears on various county records from 1782 to 1789.
Members of the three families moved
again in 1790 to Burke Co., NC, where William was listed next to John Dillard
in the 1790 census of Morgan District with 4 males under 16, 3 males over 16,
and 3 females.
On 4 Aug. 1798, William (of
Buncombe Co., NC, which was formed from Burke in 1791) sold to John Acton the
plantation where he formerly lived in the Greasy Cove area of Washington Co.,
TN, near the present town of Erwin.
Beverly Gregory was a testator.
According to one source (R‑4),
Sally did not die until the early 1800's.
However, it is believed that the 1783 death date is correct, and that
two and possibly three children of William were by his second marriage. They

William Gregory, Jr. (5) was born 8
Feb. 1776 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and died 25 Sept. 1858 in Morning Sun,
Louisa Co., IA. He first married Nancy
Laws on 25 March 1795 in Buncombe, NC.
She was born about 1777 in NC.
They moved west, settling in Harrison Co., IN, where Nancy died after
the birth of their 11th child, on 15 May 1814.
William remarried 3 more times and supposedly had a total of 29
children, plus several step-children.
In the early 1840's he moved to Louisa Co., IA, along with other members
of his family.
He married second Lucy (Jones)
Moffett on 1 Sept. 1814. She died in
1832. He married his third wife, Polly
Lang (Polly Lang Turpin per R‑2), in Aug. 1835. They were divorced. He
married fourth Naomi Scott (Naomi Jackson per R‑2) on 28 Sept. 1840.
Stepchildren by his second marriage
were John Moffett, b. 17 Dec. 1809; Polly Moffett, b. 1811; and Sally Moffett,
b. 24 Dec. 1813. Stepchildren by his
fourth marriage were Angelety (?) Scott, b. 6 Sept. 1830, and Sarah Scott, b. 9
April 1832.

from a letter written to one of his brothers by William Gregory (possibly the
one born 1776, or his son). This was

of Marshall’s son, Robert G. Marshall, from “History of Kentucky” by Judge
Charles Kerr, Editor, Vol. I, The American Historical Society, Chicago and NY,
1922 p. 44: “Rev. Marhsall M. Webb
passed virtually his entire life in the vicinity of Burning Springs, where he
was an extensive and successful farmer.
As a young man he was ordained a clergyman of the Baptist Church, and
his active work in the ministry was in later years confined to the preaching of
occasional sermons and the conducting of religious services of varied kinds,
including marriages and funerals. He
was a clergyman for forty years, and his earnest and upright life gained for
him the reverent regard of those who came within the sphere of his kindly and
benignant influence. When the Civil War
was precipitated upon a divided nation he espoused the cause of the Union and
enlisted in the Eighth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, in which he became a
sergeant and with which he served during the entire period of the war. He lived up to the full tension of the
prolonged conflict between the states of the North and the South and
participated in many important battles, including those of Shiloh, Chickamauga,
Stone River, Lookout Mountains and Missionary Ridge. In action he was twice wounded, one by a bullet passing through
one of his hands and once by a similar missile passing through his arm. Rev. Marshall M. and Martha (McDaniel) Webb
became parents of six children: Luther
is a prosperous farmer near Burning Springs; Nannie is the wife of William
Cornett, a successful farmer in that same district of Clay County; George died
at the age of one year; Dr. Granville Webb is a representative physician and
surgeon at Burning Springs; Dr. Robert G. of this sketch, was the fifth child;
and Samuel is engaged in the real estate and insurance business at Astoria,
