DESCENDANTS OF MARY GRAVES
AND JOHN LUTHER
OF RANDOLPH CO., NC
GENERATION 1
Mary (“Polly”) Graves (1) was born
about 1803 in NC, and died after 8 June 1880, probably in Randolph Co.,
NC. She married John Luther, son of
George Luther and Elizabeth Auman, on 29 Jan. 1818 in Randolph Co., NC. Joshua Craven was the bondsman and Jesse
Harper, the witness. John was born
about 1795 in NC, and died after 1870, probably in Randolph Co., NC.
Siblings of John were: George Jr., Michael, Betsey, Solomon,
Charles, and Israel.
This family was listed on the 1830,
1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses in Randolph Co., NC. In 1880, daughter Visa was the head of the
household. Their children were born in
NC.
It is believed that Mary was
descended from John Graves and Margery Harvey (genealogy 77), but that has not
been proven. (R‑1, R‑2)

CHILDREN OF JORDAN LUTHER (3)
AND HANNAH VONCANNON
Delphina (“Della”) Luther (20) was
born 25 Jan. 1859 near Asheboro, Randolph Co., NC, and died 30 Jan. 1944 in
Montrose, Montrose Co., CO. She married
James (“Jim”) Wiley Bunten (or Bunton), son of Elijah Bunten and Emily Dugger,
about 1880. He was born 1 Jan. 1858 at
Elk Mills, TN, and died 30 Aug. 1943.
They were both buried in the family plot in Montrose, CO.
At the age of seven, Della had
moved with her family to near Butler, Carter Co., TN. The family had walked the entire distance. Della had carried her one year old brother,
Thomas Winston, over the mountains to the new home.
After a year of farming, Jim went
to Colorado. At that time, the second
oil field in the U.S. was developing at Florence, near Coal Creek, CO. The railroads were expanding west. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad
advertised in the eastern papers for men to cut timber for ties for the
railroad. They were paying a dollar a
day plus room and board. The company
built houses, a boarding house, and a sawmill adjacent to Coal Creek. Some of the concrete walls still stand. They called this settlement New Camp. Later Della and baby Margaret came by rail
to join Jim. Due to circumstances,
neither Della nor Jim was ever to see their parents in their beloved Tennessee
again.
Twin girls were born: Lena and Lela. One died and was buried on a hill in a shoe box. A huge rock was rolled on top of the little
grave to protect it from the wild animals, of which there were many at that
time. The name and date inscribed on the
stone was visible until 1983. It was
wild country at that time. Della often
spoke of the fears she experienced. She
told how frightened she was at one time, when she sent her two little girls,
three and five, for water from the spring around the bend. As she watched for them to return, she was
horrified to see a mountain lion come down the hill, cross the path, and
disappear in the underbrush moments before the girls appeared. There was always the fear of rattlesnakes.
Later the work ran out. They moved to the western slope of Colorado,
where Jim was regarded as one of the builders of Colorado.
Even though there were many
tragedies in their lives, they retained a sunny disposition and had so much
love to give. Their hearts and home
were always open to the less fortunate.
They helped raise some of their orphaned and homeless grandchildren.
This family was recorded on the
1900 census in Custer Co., CO and the 1910-1930 censuses in Montrose Co.,
CO. Margaret was born in TN and the
rest of the children in CO. (R‑1)
