DESCENDANTS
OF THOMAS GRAVES AND REBECCA LAWLESS
OF NC &
OH
GENERATION
1
Thomas Graves (1) was born about
1794 in Greenbrier, NC, and died 27 March 1873 in Gallia Co., OH. He married Rebecca Lawless (or Lallis)
on 29 Jan. 1814 in Ohio, possibly Gallia Co., by Charles Buck, Justice of the Peace. She was born about 1795 in NC, and died
29 Oct. 1864 in Gallia Co., OH.
There was a Thomas Graves, probably
this Thomas, in Springfield Twp., Gallia Co., OH on p. 57 in the 1820 census,
and on p. 177 in the 1830 census.
They were in the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Morgan Twp., Gallia Co., OH.
They were in the 1860 census for
Vinton Post Office, Morgan Twp., Gallia Co., OH, page 141, house 1030, family
965: Thomas Graves, age 66, M. farmer; Rebecca Graves, 65, F; Emiline (?)
Boyles (?), 14, F. Next door
(house 1031, family 966) was: Jackson Sexton, 28, M, farmer; Mary Sexton
(daughter of Thomas Graves), 28, F; Hellen Sexton, 5, F; Daniel Sexton, 3, M.
Some of the evidence for the
children of Thomas Graves is not as strong as desired. The 1850 census for Morgan Twp., Gallia
Co., OH, did list children James, Mary, Margaret and George, and son Thomas
with his family was living next door in 1850. However, the identities of the older children is less
certain. In addition to Riley and
Ira, who were living close to their probable father Thomas in Gallia Co., OH,
possible sons (or other relatives) who went to Benton Co., OR, include Wesley
Graves, b.c. 1817, OH, m. Rebecca Shoemaker, and William Graves, b.c. 1823, OH,
m. Barbara Shoemaker. Wesley
Graves (b. 1817), William Graves (b. 1823) and James Graves (b. 1830) were all
cabinet makers, and they all moved to Benton Co., OR. Both Wesley and William were in Harrisonville, Knox Co., IL
in 1850, and all three were in Benton Co., OR in 1860. The list of 8 sons below exactly fits
the number and ages of the males listed for Thomas Graves in the 1820, 1830,
and 1840 censuses.
In addition to the James Graves of
genealogy 161, mentioned in the next paragraph, there was also a Levi Graves in
the 1820 census of Springfield Twp., Gallia Co., OH, who was born
1775-1794. This is probably the
Levi Graves (b. 1780-1790) found in the 1830 census for Greene Co., IN, but not
found in later censuses. Some of
those in genealogies 161, 11, 350, and 888, generally from Surry Co., NC, lived
in Greene Co., IN, and may be related to Levi Graves.
It seems possible that Thomas
Graves was related to James Graves (b.c. 1786) of genealogy 161, since they
were associated with some of the same families, were both from NC, used some of
the same names, and the family of James Graves lived in Gallia Co., OH for a
while, being recorded in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Morgan Twp., before
moving to Jay Co., IN. (R‑1)
