Rev. 14 Feb. 2011, Gen. 205
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM
GRAVES AND SUSANNAH TAYLOR
OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) was born 6 Aug.
1822 in Cambridgeshire, England, died 8 Aug. 1910, and was buried in Pence
Cem., Baldwin, Jackson Co., Iowa.
He married Susannah Taylor in 1848 in England. She was born 27 March 1827 (or 1832 according to R‑3),
died 10 Oct. 1873, and was supposedly buried in Washington Cem., near Lost
Nation, Clinton Co., IA (just south of Baldwin, across the county line). They arrived in Ohio in 1851 (thereby
missing the 1851 census in England) and settled in Iowa near Baldwin, Jackson
Co., IA (about 30 miles west of the Mississippi River), in 1853.
There is a marriage record for a
William Graves and Susanna in the June quarter of 1848, recorded in North
Witchford, Cambridgeshire, vol. 14, page 181 (indexed in freebmd.com). Witchford is only about 8 miles north
of Cottenham, indicating a possible link with that Graves family. No William Graves of the right age has
yet been found in the 1841 census of Cambridgeshire. William and Susanna were in the 1860 census of Monmouth
Twp., Jackson Co., IA, with son Fred, 7, and daughter E.S.C. (probably Edith),
3. The family has not been found
in the 1870 census. William was in
the 1880 census of Monmouth, Jackson Co., IA, with sons Harry, 21, and Owen,
10. It is not known what happened
to Fred, and it seems strange that Harry wasnÕt listed in the 1860 census
– perhaps he wasnÕt born until 1860, after the census, even though family
records and the 1900 census show him born in 1859.
William and his unmarried son Owen
were both in the 1900 census for Monmouth Twp., Jackson Co., IA, as boarders in
the household of Wesley Snaburger.
The 1900 census gives WilliamÕs immigration date as 1854, but that does
not appear correct (as discussed above), and William and Susannah have not been
found in the 1851 census in England.
