Rev. 9 April 2006, Gen. 130
DESCENDANTS OF CONSTANT
GRAVES AND COMFORT BATES OF REHOBETH, MA & SCITUATE, RI
GENERATION 1
Constant Graves (1) was born 16
Feb. 1751, and died 8 Aug. 1804 in Scituate, R.I. He is said to have come from Scotland soon after the Battle of
Lexington. (An obituary of Dr. Isaac
Selden Graves, a descendant, says that he came to America from Ireland. One of the papers included in source R‑203
seems to indicate that he may have come from Prince Edward Island.)
He enlisted at Warwick, Rhode
Island in the R.I. Militia, and served in the Rev. War under the command of
Gen. Greene. Specifically, according to the pension application of his widow,
Constant enlisted in March 1777 and served one month as private in Capt.
Jonathan Knight's Co., Col. Waterman's R.I. Regt. He enlisted 8 June 1778, served 9 months and 9 days in Capt.
Garzia's Co., Col. Elliott's R.I. Regt. of Artillery, and was in Sullivan's
R.I. Expedition. In 1780 he enlisted
and served one month as private in Capt. Samuel Wilbur's Co., and in 1781 he
served one month in Capt. Jonathan Knight's Co., both tours in Col. John
Waterman's R.I. Regt.
He lived at one time in Rehobeth,
Mass., but after his marriage he lived in the town of Scituate, R.I. on a farm
later owned by Stephen J. Fisk. All his
children were born in Scituate.
He married Comfort Bates, daughter
of Nathan Bates and Isabella Edwards on 28 March 1779. (Note that the name is Bates rather than
Barnes as was incorrectly reported by John Card Graves. There were both Barnes and Bates in R.I.,
but only one Nathan. In his will dated
28 Dec. 1801, Nathan named all his children.)
Comfort was born 3 March 1760 and died 2 April 1847 at age 87. After the death of Constant, Comfort
received a pension for Constant's Rev. War service (Claim W. 13549). She secondly married James Knight, son of
Charles and Hannah Knight, on 23 Oct. 1814.
He was born in 1762 and died 22 Oct. 1839.
Many of Constant Graves' children
and related families moved to northeastern Pennsylvania around 1815-1830 and
settled near Scranton in Scott, Greenfield, Tompkinsville, and Carbondale. Mrs. Richard Lewis says that in the Rev.
War, Sullivan's March went through this area, and she believes that many
soldiers' families settled there as a result of that. The Rev. War records in the National Archives for Constant Graves
state that he was on Sullivan's march.
