DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES AND LAURA B. ANDERSON OF CASWELL CO., NC

GENERATION 1

James Graves (1) was born about 1865 or 1869[1] (or March 1874 according to the 1900 census) in NC, and died by 1920. He married Laura B. Anderson[2] on 25 Dec. 1890 in Anderson, Caswell Co., NC[3]. She was born in April 1872 in NC, and died 3 Jan. 1950 in Caswell Co., NC[4]. They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC. They reported 4 of their 5 children living in 1900, and all 6 of their children living in 1910; their children were born in NC. However, niece Minnie Anderson, 11, and nephew George Anderson, 2, were living with them in 1900, and it is probable that son George Graves, 13 in 1910, was actually this same nephew, again shown as cousin George Anderson in 1920. Laura was in the 1920 census for Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC, living with her son Alfred. Laura was recorded on the 1930 (age 64) and 1940 (age 64) censuses living with her daughter and son-in-law Mamie and Glennie Brown in Caswell Co., NC.

James was a farmer. He has not yet been identified in the 1880 census, so it is not known who his parents were.

2. James Thomas Graves, b. 15 June 1889 (or 10 June 1890), m(1) Ada Watlington, 28 Dec. 1910 (Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC)[5], m(2) Abbie Marion Gunn, 16 Sept. 1933 (Danville, VA[6]), d. 6 Oct. 1959 (Rockingham, Reid Co., NC). Bur. Graves Chapel Church Cem.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVES (1) AND LAURA B. ANDERSON

Martha Ann Graves (3) was born in Sept. 1892 (or 6 or 31 March 1893[8]) in Caswell Co., NC, and died 29 July 1965 in Pelham, Caswell Co., NC[9]. She married William Stadler, son of David Stadler and Minerva Mitchell, on 8 April 1922 in Caswell Co., NC. He was born 20 Nov. 1876 in Caswell Co., NC, and died 19 Dec. 1960 in Locust Hill Twp., Pelham, Caswell Co., NC[10]. They were buried in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cem., Pelham, NC. This family was recorded on the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC; their children were born in NC.

8. Sallie B. Stadler, b. 10 June 1923, never married, d. 11 June 2007 (Pelham, NC).

10. Florida Stadler, b. 4 Jan. 1927, never married, d. 8 Sept. 2007. Death date is from the SSDI; her last residence was Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC.

11. Minerva L. Stadler, b. 26 Sept. 1928, d. 12 Nov. 2008.

12. Lillie Stadler, b. 21 April 1930, never married, d. 15 May 2004. Bur. Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cem.

13. Erie Bell Stadler, b.c. 1933.

14. Cassie Dee Stadler, b. 23 March 1934, never married, d. 9 Feb. 2004 (Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC).

Alfred Graves (5) was born in April 1898 in Caswell Co., NC, and died after 1920. He married Beulah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1900 in NC. They were recorded on the 1920 census in Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC. They could not be found in the 1930 census. The information for the children listed below is from the NC birth records.

Mary (“Mamie”) Graves (6) was born about 3 Jan. 1903 in Caswell Co., NC, died 24 Dec. 1960 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, and was buried in Graves Chapel Cem., Caswell Co., NC[11]. She married Glen (“Glennie”) Brown, son of Thomas Brown, about 1922. He was born 13 March 1903 in NC, and died 27 Dec. 1970 in Caswell Co., NC[12]. He was living with his widowed father in the 1910 census for Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC, very near Mary and her family. Mamie, her mother, and sisters Martha and Beulah were recorded on the 1920 census in Locust Hill Twp.; they lived with her brother Alfred and his wife. Mamie and Glennie were recorded on the 1930 census for Locust Hill Twp., NC, and the 1940 census in Yanceyville, NC; their children were born in NC.

It was previously believed by some that this Mamie Graves was the same as the one who was a daughter of Rufus Graves and Lula Bett Williamson in genealogy 218. However, that is not correct, since that Mamie was age 22 and living with her parents in 1930, and this Mamie was slightly older with 5 children in 1930.
