JOHN GRAVES OF FREDERICK CO., VA
GENERATION 1
Nothing is presently documented for
the ancestry and early life of John Graves (1). According to family legend, he was probably born in southern
England and came to America in 1760 (or before). He settled in Frederick Co., VA, near the Shenandoah
River. This area later became part
of Clarke and Warren Counties.
John Graves leased land from Lord Fairfax's Manor of Leeds, on that part
lying between Ashby's Gap and Manassas Gap, along the eastern side of the
Shenandoah River. John and his
sons spent much time in the courts trying to establish the boundries of their
land. John first appeared in the
court records in 1760. The history
of that area of Virginia is full of land claims problems.
About the time Joseph, John and
Sarah moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio in the early 1800's, their four brothers are
said to have gone to Ky., one later moving to Missouri. According to History of Norton Co., Kansas, "several members of their
family have since distinguished themselves as lawyers, judges and
congressmen....One of them represented the Louisville, Ky. district in Congress
for several years. On Feb. 25,
1838, while a member of Congress, he shot and killed Mr. Cilly, a congressman
from Maine, in a duel. Public
sentiment against duelling had grown since 1804 when the duel between Burr and
Hamilton was fought, culminating in a fresh outbreak of public opinion in the
Graves-Cilly duel."
[The congressman referred to was
William Jordan Graves, born 8 July 1804 in New Castle, KY, died 27 Sept. 1848
in Louisville, Ky. He is listed in
Who Was Who in America and on p. 48,
1976 Graves Family Newsletter. He was a son of William Graves, born 29
Jan. 1768 in Louisa Co., VA, died 14 Dec. 1852 at Preacherville, Garrard Co.,
Ky., married Lydia Ann Williams on 2 May 1893. William Graves was a son of Rice Graves and Jane Young, and
a grandson of Thomas Graves and Ann Davenport, in genealogy 270.]
Others with the Graves name who
lived near John Graves in VA were originally believed to include Henry, Adam,
Abraham, and Peter. However,
subsequent research indicates that these were probably Groves, not
Graves. There was a large family
of Groves in Frederick Co. very early.
They were German and originally spelled their name Groff. The Graves identification comes from an
index of 1800 where the name was misspelled. Mr. Born is still working to get the families separated, but

Joseph Graves (2) was born 7 Dec.
1760 (or Jan. 1761) in Frederick Co., VA, died 1 (or 7) Oct. 1838 in Tippecanoe
Co., IN, and was buried in Pierce Cem., Battleground, Tippecanoe Co., IN. He married Susannah (or Susanna) Dyer
on 15 Jan.1793 in Frederick Co., VA.
She was born 1774 in VA, died 14 Sept. 1853 in Tippecanoe Co., and was
also buried in Pierce Cem. She was
a daughter of John Dyer, a tenant of the Manor of Leeds. She was living in White Co., IN in the
household of Jacob Graves (age 26) in the 1850 census.
There was some speculation that
they moved to Mason Co., Ky. from VA, before moving to Indiana. However, that was incorrect. This Joseph apparently moved to Coshocton
Co., Ohio in 1814 with his brother John.
The Joseph that moved to Mason Co., Ky. was the son of this Joseph's
brother, Charles, as shown by Frederick Co. court records. (In an indenture between John Graves
and John Morgan through his agent Lemuel Bent is the following: "a certain
tract of leased land in the Manor of Leeds, which his father Charles Graves,
dec., devised to his three sons and of which the said John Graves owned one
half, he and his brother Joseph having bought out the share of his brother
William...", Deed Book 48, p. 118.)

John Graves (3) was born about 1765
in Frederick Co., VA (area near Shenandoah River, later part of Clarke or
Warren Co.), and died 18 March 1830 in Coshocton Co., OH. The name of his first wife is not
known. She was probably the mother
of all his children. He married
second Mary Lester on 29 Jan. 1797 in Frederick Co., VA, by Alexander Balmain. (However, if he really married Mary
Lester in 1797, then it would appear that she was the mother of all his
children, since they were all born 1797 and later.) Mary married second Joseph Wagner in Sept. (or 28 Oct.) 1830

(or VA), died 13 Jan. 1869 in Tippecanoe Co., IN, and was also buried in Pierce
Cem. He was listed on the 1840,
1850, and 1860 census records as a farmer in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN.
The identity of children John and Johnson
is unproven. Their birthdates
probably being the same year is puzzling, unless they were twins. Also, John was listed with the family
in 1850 and 1860, and Johnson was not.

in Indiana, probably Battleground, Lafayette Co., IN. She married Jacob Potter on 30 Nov. 1820 in Coshocton Co.,
OH. In JacobÕs pension affidavit,
he listed his marriage date as 30 Nov. 1820; other sources have given 20 Dec.
1820. He was born 5 March 1795
probably in Maryland, and died after April 1872 in Indiana, probably Battleground,
IN. His parents were Philo Potter,
born 24 Jan. 1768 in NJ, died 13 March 1835 in Coshocton Co., OH, and Mary
Hixenbaugh, born 24 Nov. 1773 in Lebanon, Hunterdon Co., NJ. He was a brother of Christina Potter
who married Lucy's brother James Graves (#16). This family was listed on the 1850 census in Tippecanoe
Twp., Tippecanoe Co., IN, page 27, entry 371. LucindaÕs age was given as 49. Their first nine children were born in Coshocton Co., OH and
the last two in Tippecanoe Co., IN.

He first married Sarah McCoy, daughter of Joseph Washington McCoy, Sr.
and Amelia Taylor, on 6 Nov. 1823 in Coshocton Co., OH. She died 4 April 1847, and was buried
in Pierce Cem., Tippecanoe Co., IN.
He married second Eliza (Blizzard) Cramer (or Kramer) before 1850. She
had three children by her previous marriage: Reuben, William, and James
Kramer. The first 8 children died
in Tippecanoe Co., IN, with the possible exception of Adaline and Lydia, whose
place of death is not known. This family was recorded in Harrison

Johnson Graves (19) was born Sept.
1805 (or 30 July 1802) in Virginia, died 10 (or 30) Jan. 1879 in Tippecanoe
Co., IN, and was buried in Pierce Cem., Battleground, Tippecanoe Co. (The 30 July 1802 date is from the
cemetery records; it is the same birthdate as his brother John.) His will is on record in Tippecanoe
Co. He first married Nancy Cain on
6 Dec. 1825 (or 1824) in Coshocton Co., OH. She died about 1842.
He married second Martha Ann Jones on 27 (or 21) Nov. 1843 in Tippecanoe
Co., IN. She was born 20 March
1814 in VA (her age is listed as 36 on the 1850 Tippecanoe Twp., Tippecanoe
Co., IN census, dwelling 385).
According to information sent by R‑4 ÒIt was an unfortunate
marriage that finally ended in a divorce in 1855.Ó The first five children were born in Ohio and the others in
Indiana (although one source says they were all born in Ohio). Johnson married third Martha (Goss)
Barton, daughter of John Goss of NC, on 29 Oct. 1865. Martha was born about 1828, possibly in Georgia, died
2 April 1895 in Tippecanoe Co., and was buried in Pierce Cem. She and her daughter Lucinda were
recorded on the 1880 census in Tippecanoe Twp., page 175C.
Johnson's nephew, Levi Bryan, was
indentured to him and lived in the household, apparently because his mother,
Susan, died when he was very young.
There is some question about some
of the following children. Listed
in the Pierce Cem. records is a Wm. H. Barton Graves, son of Johnson and Martha
A., died 28 Sept. 1879 age age 18.
His approximate year of birth would be 1861, after JohnsonÕs divorce
from Martha Jones and before his marriage to Martha (Goss) Barton. He is probably a son from Martha GossÕ
marriage to ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Barton.
Listed on the 1850 census were

Hixenbaugh, born 24 Nov. 1773 in Lebanon, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Christina was a sister of Jacob Potter
who married Lucinda Graves (#16), sister of James Graves, so a brother and
sister married a sister and brother.

When his family moved to IL, George apparently stayed behind to live

also buried in White Oak Cem. (no stone).
Lemuel had been married previously and had at least three children by
that marriage: Harriet, b. 1835, m. John McDonald (or O'Donald), 8 June 1892;

Mary Jane Graves (175) was born 21

stayed 4 years, then returned to her father's home, where she died of
tuberculosis.
She married Robert Franklin Lockard
on 29 Oct. 1854. He was born 14 Jan. 1834 in Jefferson Co., Ohio, and died 12
Dec. 1862 in St. Louis, Mo. He
moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio with his parents in 1836. He was a member of Company G, 80th Ohio
Volunteers, in 1861, contracted typhoid fever, died in a hospital in St. Louis,
Mo., and was buried in Soldiers' Cem. in St. Louis. His parents, Andrew J. Lockard (born 1803) and Mary Carson,
came to the United States from Ireland in 1820.

James William Graves (186) was born
26 Jan. 1839 in Coshocton, Coshocton Co., OH, and died 25 May 1927 in Norwich,
Kingman Co., KS. He married Nancy
Ellen McMorris, daughter of James F. McMorris and Jane Gibson, about 1859. She was born 17 Aug. 1841 in Coshocton,
OH, and died 14 Nov. 1913 in Norwich, KS.
They supposedly lived in Green Co., IN at one time. They were in the 1900 census for Gove,
Pratt Co., KS. He was a
farmer. Their first child was born
in Coshocton, OH, the next in IN (probably Green Co.), and the others in
Decatur Co., IA.
The following obituary for him is
from the Norwich Herald, Thursday,
March 26, 1927. ÒAfter a short
illness, Mr. J. W. Graves passed to the beyond on Tuesday afternoon in Norwich
at the home of his son, Howard Graves.
His call was to most of us, rather sudden. Although he is past the age of eighty-eight, his health was
not bad and his excellent constitution seemed good for any ordinary illness for
several years to come. James
William Graves, the fifth son of Henderson and Rebecca Ann Graves, was born
January 26, 1839 in Coshocton County, Ohio. In early manhood he became a member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church and lived a devoted life up to the time of his death, May 25,
1927.
On March 5, 1859, he was united in
marriage to Nancy Ellen McMorris, who passed away on November 14, 1913. To this union were born ten children,
five having preceded them to the better world, four of them in infancy and
Fleeta B. Anderson on April 26, 1887 at Pleasanton, Iowa.
He served three years in the Civil
War in Co. I, 97th (Ohio) Infantry. After the war he settled in Iowa until 1900 when he came to
Isabel, Kansas. In 1905 he moved
west of Norwich. Later he bought
in town where he resided until the death of his wife, after which he lived with
his daughter, Emma, and son, Clyde, until 1922. Since that time he has made his home with his granddaughter,
Mrs. Chet Albin.
He is survived by four sons and one
daughter, one brother, thirty-nine grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren,
nephews, nieces, and a large number of friends.
All his children were present. Mrs. Ira Hall, Norwich; Harvey of
Arkansas City, Clyde of Arlington, Emmett of Davis City, Iowa; Howard of
Norwich, and granddaughter, Mrs. Roy Ihrutchley of Kansas City, Mo. He lived a remarkably active and useful
life, and his absence will be keenly felt by all with whom he was associated.
The funeral was held at 2:39 at the
Baptist Church. Rev. D. I. Howard
conducted the funeral services and was assisted by Rev. McClellan and Rev.
Lon. Interment was in the Stitch

13 Nov. 1923 in Worthington, Greene Co., IN, and was buried 15 Nov. 1923 in
Stanley Cem., north side of Highway 48, not far from Worthington.
After he died, Frances married
Absolom Barton, then married Henry Newport, and finally married John Pierce.
Because Isaac's son was less than 2 years old when Isaac died, and Frances
remarried three times, the family knows very little about Isaac.
Although no information has been
found to show the exact date Isaac died and where he was buried, records in
Probate Court in Greene Co., IN, show that Isaac's mother, Emily, filed suit to
get back property she had given Isaac when he married. It seems Isaac had sold a part of this
land to Joel Shouse (Frances' father), and Emily felt she should have it back
and went to court against Frances, Hilary, and Mr. Shouse. (How could Isaac have sold property to
Joel if Joel died in 1850?) (R‑7)
