DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES
OF NC, TN & BLOUNT CO.,
AL
ANCESTRY OF THIS GRAVES
FAMILY
It was believed by Aubrey E. Graves
(R‑200) that his ancestor, John Graves, who was born in NC in 1779 and
first married Betty Beeson, was a son of a James Graves who is also the
probable father of James Graves who married Sarah Watkins. A portion of his discussion follows.
"The fact that our John Graves
of Blount [County, AL] married Elizabeth (Betty) Beeson and that they were both
born in North Carolina helped us tremendously.
A complete Beeson genealogy has been prepared which we examined in
several libraries, and it places the Beesons in and around Guilford and
Randolph Counties [NC] from 1755 to 1802.
We find Elizabeth (Betty) Beeson's father, Captain Edward Beeson, living
in Surry County [NC] in 1810, with John Graves and a James Graves, born around
1750, living in close proximity. This
coincidence leads us to believe that here we have James Graves, the father of
John. A James Graves is also found in
the 1800 Census of Randolph County, North Carolina with several male children
who well could be the early pioneer Graves who settled in Blount County,
Alabama. Many other circumstances point
to this as being the James Graves, father of John, including a family tradition
among the older Blount Countians that John's father was James.
Consequently, with our minds open
for more direct proof than we now have, we begin our immediate family treatise
with 1-JAMES GRAVES and the information we have been able to accumulate
concerning him. Whence he came to
settle for a few years in Surry County, we do not know but we have reason to
believe he came from Randolph County along with the Beesons. Neither do we know in which county John was
born, but we know he was born in North Carolina and certainly one James Graves
was living in Randolph County at the time he was born.
The Beesons were living in Randolph
County in 1800; and, besides the James Graves, there were also Samuel,
Benjamin, Richard, William and John Graves, living there in 1790 and prior
thereto, as well as being there in 1800..."
1-James
Graves, b. ca 1750, is first found in Randolph County, North Carolina, in
1785, in the County Court Minutes under the following entry: “James Graves
enters 200 acres of land lying on the south side of Rutland Creek, beginning at
John Gamon's southwest corner – 3/28/1785”.
We next find James Graves in the
1790 Census of Randolph County with the following family: Graves,
James: 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16,
2 females.
In the 1800 Census of Hillsboro,
Randolph County we find James Graves with this family: Graves, James: 3
males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16, 2 males 16 to 25, 1 male over 45, 1 female
under 10, 2 females 16-25, and 1 female over 45.
It is to be noted that here during
this time he was living in the same County with other Graves: Richard, Sr., John, William, Samuel, Sr. and
Benjamin...He was also near the Beesons, Lathams, Lambs, and other families
whom we know to be closely associated with our family. Captain Edward Beeson married Selena Lamb; Latham Graves was a pioneer Blount
Countian, etc.
However, by 1810 this 1-James
Graves is not to be found in Randolph County; that is, he is not mentioned in
the County Minutes and in the 1815 Tax List of Randolph County he does not
appear as a landowner. Apparently, he
has left the County by 1810.
Fortunately, we find James Graves
in Surry County, North Carolina, in 1809 under this entry in the County Court
Minutes: “A deed from W. Spraggins to
James Graves was proved in Court by James Watkins.”
In the 1810 Census for Surry County
we find James Graves with the following family: Graves, James: 2 males 10 to 16, 3 males 16 to 25, 1 male
over 45, 1 female 25-44, 1 female over 45.
Apparently, James Graves did not
tarry long in Surry County for we find him again in 1810 under this entry in
the County Court Minutes: “A deed from
James Graves to Andrew Mattue was proved in open court by Thomas Johnson”.
And by 1812 we find James Graves
still in Surry County but owning “no acres”.
This is the last entry pertaining to him that is to be found in Surry County.
Interestingly enough, as we have
repeated hereinabove, during his stay in Surry for some three or four years, we
find John Graves, believed to be our 2-John Graves, mentioned several times in
connection with road work, bringing a suit against Andrew Mattue, with Edward
Beeson and James Graves as his witnesses, all strongly indicating that these
three: 1-James Graves, 2-John Graves,
and Edward Beeson all lived nearby. After
1812 the records are silent as to the three again indicating that they were no
longer there. We know John Graves was
in Sequatchie Valley, Tennessee, in 1815; Captain Edward Beeson was in Alabama;
the later whereabouts of James Graves we have not accounted for."
Aubrey Graves believed that his
line of the family descended from one or more of the Graves families found in
Randolph Co., NC. He states (p. 131 of
his book): "A research into the early history of the Graves families in
Randolph County, North Carolina reveals quite clearly that there were at least
five pioneer settlers in that County.
Where they came from to this County we are not yet able to say. However, we do venture the suggestion that
they were direct descendants of either Rice6 Graves or Richard6
Graves of Virginia [apparently children of Thomas Graves and Ann Davenport]...This
is based partly on the fact that subsequent generations of these Graves in
Alabama took the names of Rice and Richard and Samuel and James and John. We consider this a fact of high probative
value, and we found some of them in North Alabama near Blount County.
These early Randolph pioneer Graves
families, as revealed from deed records, deed entries, tax lists, census
reports, etc. were the following: [1]
Richard Graves, b. 1769, d. 1849; [2] John Graves, b. probably about 1750; [3]
Samuel Graves, Sr., probably born by 1750; [4] William Graves, born by 1760;
[5] Leonard Graves, born by 1880 [sic, should be 1780]; [6] James Graves, born
about 1750." This John Graves,
b.c. 1750, was probably the one who married Margery Harvey, and he is probably
the father of Samuel, William, Richard, and possibly Leonard. James Graves is the one previously
discussed. Could James and John, both
born about 1750, have been brothers?
There is some additional
speculation by Aubrey E. Graves in his book about possible lines of descent
from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA.
GENERATION 1
John Graves (1) was born in 1779 in
NC, and died in 1853 in DeKalb Co., AL.
He lived in NC, Sequatchie Valley, TN, and Blount and DeKalb counties in
AL. According to the Blount and DeKalb Co., AL censuses, he was born in NC, and
according to the probate records in the DeKalb Co. courthouse, he died in 1853
in that county. Tradition has it that
he was buried in the Providence Hill Cem. there.
He first married Elizabeth
("Betty") Beeson, daughter of Capt. Edward Beeson and Ann Pennington,
about 1799 in NC. She was born in 1776
in NC, died about 1824 in Blount Co., AL, and was buried in the Graves Cem. in
Blount Co. She first married Professor ‑‑‑‑‑‑
Gorman, her music teacher. They moved
to Tennessee where they had one child, Alfred Gorman. Gorman died there, and Betty returned to NC, where Alfred was
adopted by his grandfather Edward Beeson, and became known as Alfred Gorman
Beeson. By 1815, all six of John and
Betty’s children (except William, the youngest) had been born. Capt. Edward Beeson settled in St. Clair
Co., AL, and later lived in Marshall Co., AL, where he died.
Capt. Edward Beeson was born about
1757 and served in the American Revolution.
He was a son of Benjamin Beeson (b. 1739) and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. Benjamin was a son of Richard Beeson (b.
1684) and Charity Grubb (b. 1687).
Richard Beeson was a son of Edward Beeson, Sr. and Rachel Pennington (b.
1650), who both left England between 1682-84 with the Penn emigrants.
John Graves married second Lydia (‑‑‑‑‑‑)
Chaney (or Cheney), widow of John Jacob Chaney, on 8 Oct. 1825 in Blount Co.,
AL. John Chaney was the son of Jeremiah
Chaney and Mary Frances Kirby.
According to the 1850 census, recorded 4 Dec. 1850) for DeKalb Co.,
Lydia was born about 1800 in VA. She
died in 1850.
John married a third time, shortly
after the death of Lydia, Mary (Roden) Bailey (also known as
"Polly"), daughter of John B. Roden and Nancy Braswell, on 17 Dec.
1850 in DeKalb Co., AL. Mary married first
William P. Bailey on 30 Nov. 1827 in Blount Co., AL. Mary was born 18 Oct. 1807 in KY, and died after 30 June 1880
when she was recorded on the census with her daughter Susan (Bailey) Dilbeck’s
family in DeKalb Co., AL. It is also of
interest that a sister of Mary (Roden) Bailey was Martha (Roden) Carns, mother
of Mary Jane Elizabeth Carns who married John's grandson, Alexander Graves
(#33).
It is believed that John Graves was
an elder son of James Graves of Randolph and Surry counties, NC. He is found living in Surry Co. next to his
father, James Graves, and near his father-in-law, Edward Beeson, in the 1810
census of that county. By 1815, John
Graves no longer appears in the minutes of Surry Co. Court as engaged in any
activity, nor does he appear in the 1820 census of Surry Co. This is a fair indication that he was no
longer living there.
According to "Early East
Tennessee Tax List" by Mary Barnett Curtis, in Bledsoe Co., TN, which is
in Sequatchie Valley, in 1815 a petition to delay the enactment of the Land Law
during the war between the U.S. and England and afterwards, was signed by the
following: Aaron Lamb, Adam Lamb,
Alexander Lamb, Thomas Beeson, John Graves, and Latham Graves. This fact, coupled with a strong tradition
among the Graves and Beeson families, shows definitely that John Graves was in
Bledsoe Co., TN around 1815. However,
it is entirely possible that he may have arrived a year or two earlier. He was accompanied by the Lambs and Beesons
and, significantly, by Latham Graves who was one of the early settlers of
Blount Co., AL. (R‑14, R‑15,

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (1)
Alexander ("Alex") Graves
(2) was born about 1800 in NC, died between 1870-1880 in Blount Co., AL, and
was buried there in the Graves Cem. between Blountsville and Royal, where many
of his children were also buried. He
moved to Blount Co. with his parents not later than 1818. He settled on Graves Creek between
Blountsville and Royal. He was listed
on the 1870 census, and Drusilla was recorded on the 1880 census as a widow.
He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑
Chamblee. She had one child who died in
infancy, and she may have died about the same time. He married second Drusilla Sanders on 18 Nov. 1823[1]
in Blount Co., AL; her name was recorded as Lilicus Sanders on the marriage
record. She was the mother of all his
surviving children. Drusilla was born
about 1810 in NC, and died after 1880; she was recorded with son Stokes’ family
on the 1880 census in Blount Co., AL.
She was from a wealthy Mississippi family of planters. The family bible of Alex Graves may be in
the possession of the family of Mrs. Frances Copeland, who lives in the
vicinity of Hillsboro, TX.
When Alex's children married, he
gave each of them a family of slaves.
He owned about twenty slaves when they were freed. Some of the descendants of these slaves live
in Detroit, MI. (R‑3, R‑11,

in Royal Cem. (Blount Co., AL).
Hiram Graves (3) was born about
1802 in NC, died 6 April 1891 in DeKalb Co., and was buried in Providence Hill
Cem., Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL.
He married Judy (or Juda) Brown on 7 Dec. 1824 in Blount Co., AL
(Marriage Records, vol. A, p. 104). She
was born in 1806, died in 1895 (or 11 Nov. 1898 per her tombstone), and was
also buried in Providence Hill Cem.
Aubrey Graves (R‑200)
believed that Judy was possibly a daughter of William Brown. However, Velvo Chaney (R‑14) stated
that an Orphans Court record of 1830, Blount Co., AL, proves that Judy and her
sister Cary Brown (who married Andrew Jackson Chaney, son of John Chaney and
Lydia ‑‑‑‑‑‑, John Graves second wife) were
the children of Joshua Brown, deceased.
Hiram Graves was appointed guardian of the minor Brown children; Cary
Brown and Walker Brown were under 14 years of age, and Patsy and David Brown
were over 14 years but under 21 years of age.
The 1830 census of Blount Co., AL indicates that children of those ages
lived with the Hiram Graves family.
While a youth, Hiram Graves settled
with his parents in Blount Co., and lived there until the early 1840's or
perhaps earlier, when he moved northward and settled in DeKalb Co., in Big
Wills Valley on Big Wills Creek.
Throughout his lifetime, Hiram was
a farmer, becoming a rather large landowner and slaveowner for his section of
the country. A number of his children
continued to live in the Valley, while some of them moved to Sand
Mountain. It is reported that as each
of his children married, he gave them a sizable tract of land for a home. With
a family as large as his, he would have had to own much land to do this.
Hiram Graves, a deacon at Mount
Pleasant Baptist Church (now Providence Hill) in Wills Valley south of
Collinsville, was a signer of the original deed for the three acres of land on
which the church stands. (A member of
the Graves family has a copy of the deed.)
A picture of Hiram Graves and his
wife, Judy (Brown) Graves is shown below.

Mary ("Polly") Graves (4)
was born about 1809 or 1812 in NC or TN[2]
(or De Kalb Co., AL according to R‑31), and died 22 Feb. 1876 in
Guntersville, Marshall Co., AL. She married
Clairborne (alternately listed as Clayborn or Clabourne) Tiffin (or Tiffen),
son of Henry J. Tiffin and Mary Kincheloe, on 28 Feb. 1830 in Oneonta, Blount
Co., AL. He was born 8 Dec. 1810 in
Washington Co., TN, and died in 1852 in Guntersville, AL. They were both buried in Pendergrass Cem.,
Marshall Co., AL. Polly's sister Ann
married Edward Tiffen, brother of Clairborne.
A deed was found in the probate office of DeKalb Co., AL, conveying
property to Polly and Clairborne. The
1850 DeKalb Co., AL census lists the following children except for Joseph and
David; all were born in AL. At least
the first 4 children were born in Blount Co.

Tiffin and Mary Kincheloe, on 18 April 1827[3]
in Oneonta, Blount Co., AL, the same day her sister Nancy married Henry
Parham. Edward was born 6 Sept. 1802 in
TN (or Pickaway Co., OH per R‑31), and died 6 May 1876 in Red Bay,
AL. On the 1850 census in Franklin Co.,
AL, only the following children are recorded with this family: Henry Clay, 20, Mary, 16, Claborn [sic], 13,
William, 10, ‘Melda’, 8, and Sarena, 6.
In 1860, still in Franklin Co., AL, additional children Evalina, 13,
Edward 11, and Nancy, 8 are recorded.
It is unclear if Melinda and Margaret are actually children of Anne and
Edward Tiffin. (R‑5, R‑16,

Capt. William Graves (7) was born
10 March 1818 in Blount Co., AL, died 3 May 1865, and was buried in
Blountsville Cem., Blount Co., AL. He
married Martha Pullen. She was born
about 1821 in AL, and died after 1870.
She was also buried in Blountsville Cem. They were shown in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Blount Co., with
all the following children except William, all born in AL. In the 1850 census Captain William was listed
as a farmer, living with his wife and four children, Milton, Nancy, Markus, and
Mary. In the 1860 census he was listed
as a merchant with a net worth of $15,000, and 7 children. Martha was listed as a farmer on the 1870
census in Blountsville, AL.
With the outbreak of the Civil War,
William organized Graves Company, Alabama Cavalry, C.S.A., and was commissioned
a captain. Following several campaigns,
he was shot and killed from ambush on 3 May 1865. (R‑39, R‑200)

Sarah Hester Graves (8), called
"Sallie" or "Hetty", was born about 1826 in AL, and died
after 13 Feb. 1891. She married Augusta
W. Mullins about 1844. He was born
about 1827 in GA, and died after 1860.
She filed for a widow’s pension for Augusta’s confederate service in 42nd
Regt., Tenn. on 13 Feb. 1891. This marriage
is indicated by the court settlement of her father's estate in 1853 in DeKalb
Co., AL. They lived on the farm
adjoining that of Rev. Samuel Smith, father of John Samuel Smith who married
Elizabeth Graves, daughter of Hiram and Judy (Brown) Graves. This family was recorded on the 1850 census
in DeKalb Co., AL census and the 1860 census in Jackson Co., AL; listed as
Esther, she was recorded as the head of household on the 1870 and 1880 censuses
in Jackson Co., AL. Their children were
born in AL. (R‑14, R‑25)

Y. C. Graves (11) was born about
1830-33 in Blount Co., AL, and died about 1875-80 in Blount Co. R‑30 submitted information in May 2000
that DeKalb Co. marriage records show a marriage for Y. C. Graves to Sarah
Margaret Adair, daughter of James Adair and Sarah Sharp, on 22 March 1851[4]
in DeKalb Co., AL. Sarah Adair was born
about 1830 in SC, and died before 7 May 1854 when Y. C. married again. R‑30 believes she died at the time of
John’s birth. The first marriage
information was also submitted by R‑15 with an additional marriage
recorded: Y. C. married second Sarah
Margaret Patten/Patter/Potter on 7 May 1854[5]. Sarah Patten (or Patter/Potter) was born
about 1837 in SC, and died after 1880.
There is a Sarah Graves, born in Dec. 1849 in AL, recorded as the
mother-in-law to Turner Lucy on the 1900; however, the census information
contradicts previously known data. R‑14
indicates that Sarah’s parents were Henry Potter, son of Ephraim Potter, and
Margaret (“Peggy”) Ames.
R‑30 believes that son John
H. was the only child born to the first marriage; however the following census
information neither proves nor disproves that theory. The disparity of John’s age from census year to census year makes
it difficult to determine who John’s mother really was.
Y. C. and second wife Sarah were
listed in the 1860 census for Blount Co., AL, with their children, all born in
AL: John, 6, Henry, 3, and Margaret,
6/12. Sarah was listed as the head of
the family in Etowah Co., AL in 1870, with Jno. [John], 14, Henry, 13, Margret
[sic], 9, Jas 5, and Geo [female], 1.
Y. C. was apparently still alive in 1870, since two more children were
listed in the 1880 DeKalb Co., AL census when John was listed as the head of
family: John, 22, Henry, 20, James, 10
[sic], Georgia Ann, 8, Calvine [sic], and Sallie, 5, and mother, Sarah,
40. The column on the 1880 census which
indicated the place of birth for the mother of John was blank; and the place of
birth for the mother of the other children is listed incorrectly as AL. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses indicate
that Sarah Graves was born in SC. When
John was recorded on the 1900 census, his year of birth was recorded as Feb.
1855, and the places of birth for himself, his father and mother were all
recorded as AL. (R‑14, R‑15,
R‑30, R‑47, R‑200)

Ira Graves (13) was born 30 Nov.
1836 (or 1837) in Blount Co., AL, and died 11 June 1911 in Center, Shelby Co.,
TX. He married Sarahann S. Mathis, daughter
of Edward Mathis and Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 20
July 1854[6]
in DeKalb Co., AL. She was born 11 May
1834 in DeKalb Co, AL, and died 15 May 1909 in Silas, Shelby Co., TX. They were both buried in New Hope Cem.,
Shelby Co., TX.
The story goes that "Ira moved
west to Shelby Co., TX just before the war, from Montgomery, AL". (On Ira's Civil War pension application he
listed 1857.) "There [in
Montgomery] he had a farm which he left for someone else to sell. He was married to Susannah Mathis whose
father, Edward Mathis, was the Wagon Master.
Ira and Susannah had one young son named John W. when they moved. [This should read two, since Ned was born in
1858.] The farm in Alabama did sell,
but he did not receive the money until after the war. It was in Confederate dollars, so he really gave it away."
The first census Ira is listed on
in Shelby Co., TX is 1870, although his war pension application said he lived
in Shelby Co. during the war. He was
recorded on the 1850 census for DeKalb Co., AL, and the 1870 through 1910
censuses in Shelby Co., TX. In 1910,
listed as Susia, she stated that all ten of her ten children were living. (R‑8, R‑14, R‑15, R‑200)

CHILDREN OF ALEXANDER GRAVES (2)
AND DRUSILLA SANDERS
Esther Hetty (or Hettie) Graves
(15), called Hettie, was born 30 Jan. 1823 (or 1825), and died after 1870,
probably in TX. She married William
Chaney (or Cheney), son of John Chaney and Lydia ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
on 20 Feb. 1840[7] in Blount
Co., AL. He was born about 1818 in TN,
and also died after 1870. He was a
brother of A. Jackson Chaney who married Cary Brown (sister of Judy Brown), and
John Chaney who married Minerva Griffin.
It is family tradition that the
family moved to Texas about 1857-58, and that William Chaney, son of A. Jackson
and Cary Chaney also moved to TX about 1859.
Children Lydia through James were born in AL; Enoch and Jasper in DeKalb
Co. and the others in Blount Co.
William, Drusilla, and Thomas were born in TX. This family was recorded on the 1850 census in DeKalb Co., AL,
the 1860 census in Titus Co., TX, and the 1870 census in Ellis Co., TX. (R‑13, R‑14, R‑25)

census with 20-year old Barbara and 1-year old Lafayette. On the 1860 Blount Co. census, he was
recorded with wife, Barbara, and his first four children, all born in AL. He married second Manila Ann Reid on 22 Dec.
1867[8]
in Blount Co., AL. This family was
recorded on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Blount Co., AL. Listed as Manila A., his second wife was
listed on the 1900 census in Blountsville, Blount Co., AL as a 52-year old
widow with children Lucinda, James, Jane, and John; all nine of her nine
children were living. D. B. Graves and
his wives were buried in a cemetery between Welcome Church and County Hwy. 26,

Sarah Selena Beeson Graves (19),
called Selena, was born 27 Oct. 1831 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1895; she
was called Amy S. on the 1880 census.
She married Calvin Chamblee, son of Robert Carter Chamblee and Mary
Warren, about 1848 in Blount Co., AL.
He was born about 1824 and died 8 July 1891, both in Blount Co., AL, and
was buried in Gum Springs Cem., Blount Co., AL. Their children were born in Blount Co. AL, but several of them
moved to TX.
Information on several genealogy
websites in 2005 indicates that Calvin Chamblee’s wife was actually Amy Selena
Holt, daughter of Charles Holt; Calvin and ‘Salene’ were living with the John
Holt family in Blount Co., AL in 1850, but that neither proves or disproves the
Holt connection. Other sources say that
Selena was Selena Beeson who first married an unknown Graves about 1846 and
then married Calvin about 1848. No
marriage record for Calvin or Selena has been located.
R‑13 has a copy of William
Vernon Chamblee’s death certificate which lists his mother’s maiden name as
Graves. (R‑8, R‑13, R‑25,

Celia Nation Graves (20) was born
26 Oct. 1833 in Blount Co., AL, and died after 1910, probably in Hunt Co.,
TX. She first married William P. Aycock
on 18 Aug. 1852[9] in Blount
Co., AL. He apparently died before 1860;
Celia and her children were recorded on the 1860 census in Blountsville; in
1870, she was again recorded in Blountsville with only two children, F. H., a
16-year old female, and W. S., an 11-year old female]. She married second James St. Clair on 15 (or
16[10])
April 1874 in Blount Co., AL. They were
recorded on the 1880 census in Hunt Co., TX.
He was born about 1822 in AL, and died before 1900. Celia was recorded on the 1900 and 1910
censuses as a widow in Hunt Co., TX; only one of her three children was
living. In 1900, two St. Clair stepsons
and a granddaughter, Minnie Rambo, born in Texas in May 1884 lived with
her. In 1910, a grandson, Clyde Ham,
born about 1883 in AL, his wife Ethel, and son J. K., lived with her. On his World
War I Draft Registration Card, Ham is listed as Melton Clyde Ham, born 13
Oct. 1882. It is unclear if these are
actually Aycock descendants. (R‑13,

JUDY BROWN
Elizabeth ("Betty" or
"Betsy") Ann Graves (28) was born 17 Feb. 1826 in Blount Co., AL, and
died 16 June 1911 in DeKalb Co., AL.
She married John Samuel Smith about 1846, probably in DeKalb Co., AL,
although no marriage record is known.
He was born about 1823, probably in Pickens Dist., SC, and died 15 May
1869 in DeKalb Co., AL. They moved to
DeKalb Co., AL, probably at the time of their marriage. The family was recorded on the 1850 and 1860
censuses in DeKalb Co., AL. John’s age
was recorded as 23, born SC in 1850 and 31, born GA in 1860. In 1860, Elizabeth was listed as Edy. They were both buried in Providence Hill
Cem. Their children were born in DeKalb
Co.
John is listed in military records
as John M. Smith. He appears on a roll
of independent scouts in Baxter Gilbreath’s company in the service of the Union
Army, although it was never officially linked to federal service. His birthplace is listed as Pickens Dist.,
SC. He and his oldest son Martin P.
were probably conscripts, since their service began March 1, 1865. (R‑14, R‑18, R‑200, R‑207)

Elizabeth (Graves) Smith (right)
and her sister, Polly (Graves) Roden
Esther Graves[16]
(29) was born about 1829 in AL, died 22 May 1903, and was buried in Wilson
Cem., Winston Co., AL. She married
Thomas W. (“Tom”) Wilson on 28 March 1851 in DeKalb Co., AL[17]. This was the first appearance of Thomas Wilson
in official records. “Although
unconfirmed by official records, Thomas was believed to be from Anderson,
Abbeville District, SC, and his siblings or half-siblings are believed to
include B. F. (Ben) Wilson, Abbie Wilson Flannagan, and Sally Wilson Powell[18]. Thomas Wilson was born 4 Oct. 1830 in SC,
died 16 July 1905, and was also buried in Wilson Cem. Thomas and Esther were early residents of extreme southeast
Winston Co., AL.
At the time of the 1860 census,
Thomas and Esther Wilson already had 4 children: John L., William, Alexander,
and Susan Juda. Also living with Thomas
in 1860 was Ordrerl Wilson, a 57 year-old female who could have been Thomas’
mother or other relative, although no confirmation has been found to support
any relationship. Thomas and his family
lived in the eastern census district of Walker Co., AL, near the Hanby’s Mills
Post Office. Hanby’s Mills was located
on the Mulberry River approximately 3 miles southeast of Arkadelphia, AL[19]. Tom owned 40 acres of land of which 35 were
cultivated for farming. During the year
ending June 1, 1860, Tom tended 3 horses, 1 milk cow, 2 oxen, and 2 other
cows. With this livestock and real
estate, Tom supported his family and produced 200 bushels of Indian corn,
picked 2000 pounds of cotton (5 bales), and made 10 pounds of butter[20].
In 1860, Tom and his family were
listed next to the B. F. Wilson residence and very near the residence of
Washington Wilson[21]. B. F. and Washington had 120 and 524 acres
of land, respectively (35 and 130 acres were cultivated). Washington had moved from South Carolina in
the 1830’s and had entered government land in 1835 farther down the Mulberry
River in Township 14, Range 5[22]. Although the 1840 and 1850 census records do
not indicate that Washington had a son of Thomas’ age, it is possible that
Washington may have been a relative that influenced Thomas’ decision to settle
so very nearby.[23]
In 1861, the fifth of Thomas’
children, Hiram, was born. In
approximately 1862[24],
Thomas, Esther, and their family moved to the Rock Creek area of Township 12,
Range 6. Thomas did not own any slaves
and, like many other residents of the Winston County hills, chose not to fight
in the Civil War. Thomas avoided
Confederate service by hiding out in caves along the Rock Creek bluffs to elude
the conscription troops. These caves
are still visible when the Smith Lake water level is low. Thomas periodically emerged from hiding to
help others with the crops or to make shoes for people in the community. Thomas was said to be near-sighted.[25]
Living near Thomas was his good
friend, James Calvert. James also
sought to avoid the conscription troops but was found and taken off to
war. In a letter to his wife, Delilah,
James wrote asking for news about his neighbors with a specific message for his
friend Thomas Wilson:
“… I
have herd that the yankes is in Walker I want to hear from thare whether it is
so or not I want you to right tell me whether you have got whet sode or not,
what you have dun and what you can get dun right what all the nabers is doing
tell thomas wilson to sell that jack if he can sell him to any advantage …”[26]
James never returned to Winston
County, and died of pneumonia in a Union prisoner of war camp.
Thomas’ activities immediately
following the Civil War are unknown.
However, the last 2 of Thomas’ 7 children were born in 1864 and
1866. In a single deed executed on Feb.
9, 1870, Thomas purchased 840 acres of land from John L. Reed of Winston Co.,
AL for $1000. Fourteen of the
twenty-one 40-acre tracts were contiguously located in Sections 13 and 14 of
Township 12, Range 6. These adjacent
tracts include the land upon which the Wilson Cemetery was established (NW of
SW of Section 13 of Township 12, Range 6)[27]. In the 1870 census, Thomas’ real estate was
valued at $1500.
In 1877 and 1879, Thomas and Esther
saw their sons, William and John L., marry Nancy Ann and Susan Agnes
Blevins. John L. eventually moved away
and settled in Lampasas Co., TX[28]. In 1879 and 1889, Alexander and his sister
Sarah Wilson married Sarah Elizabeth Calvert and James Calvert, Jr., children
of James and Delilah (Stewart) Calvert.
These marriages created many double-first-cousin grandchildren of Thomas
and Esther Wilson. Delilah (b.c. 1824)
was a daughter of Samuel Stewart. James
(b.c. 1829) was a son of John W. (b. 5 (or 8) Oct. 1806) and Elizabeth
McCutcheon (b.c. 1808) Calvert.
Elizabeth was a daughter of John D. McCutcheon. John W. Calvert was a son of Joseph Calvert
(b. 5 Jan. 1782) and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (b.c.
1785)[29].
By 1900, Thomas and Esther again
lived alone in Winston Co., having raised their seven children. Esther is believed to have died of
tuberculosis in 1903 and Tom died in 1905.
They were both buried under a large cedar in Wilson Cemetery overlooking
the Rock Creek branch of Smith Lake.
Their sons Hiram and Henry and daughters Juda and Sarah were also buried
in the same family cemetery...”
According to the book by Aubrey E.
Graves, soon after their marriage, Thomas and Esther left DeKalb Co., AL, and
settled in what is now Winston Co., AL, and adjoining communities. Most of the information that Aubrey had on
this family was from the administration records of the estate of Hettie’s
sister, Nancy, who died in 1916. He
stated that probable grandchildren include: John Wilson, Jasper, AL; Thomas
Wilson, Arley, AL; Susie Lay, Arley, AL; George Wilson, Vindmont, AL (children
of William Wilson). The following were
heirs of Hettie as of 1916 (all towns in AL):
William Wilson, Arley; Benjamin Wilson, Arley; Nathaniel Wilson, Arley;
Hettie Reece, Logan (also children of William Wilson); Tommie Calvert, Jasper;
Ida Siniard, Jasper (children of Sarah Wilson); Maudie Myers, Jasper; Frank
Wilson, Ardell; Birdie Abbott, Ardell; Carrie Harbison, Ardell (children of
Henry Wilson); Thomas Abbott, Camden; James Hiram Abbott, Jasper; J. Henry
Abbott, Jasper; Sara Rushing, Jasper; Roxie Burrows, Ardell (children of Susan
Juda Wilson). (R‑17, R‑200)

Joshua ("Josh") Graves
(30) was born 12 April 1831 in Blount Co., AL, died 14 Oct. 1918, and was
buried in Providence Hill Cem., DeKalb Co., AL. Early in his life, he moved to Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., with
his parents. He married Mary Jane
Malinda Elenburg (or Ellenburg) daughter of Larkin Elenburg, in the spring of
1853 in a ceremony performed by W. C. Morgan.
She was born in 1838 and died 22 Aug. 1911. Following their marriage, they continued to live near his
father's plantation. He was given a
sizable tract of land, as were all of Hiram's children.
He was a farmer all his life, a
Primitive Baptist, and a devoted husband and father. When his wife died, he moved to Sand Mountain to live. He moved with his daughters, Betty Berry and
Parilee Haralson (or Harrelson), and they settled near the George H. Campbell
homeplace, Joshua buying 40 acres nearby and the daughters buying 40 acres of
the Campbell place. He did no more
farming after he moved to the Mountain.
During the Civil War he served in
the Union Army in Co. G, 1st Alabama and Tennessee Regiment, Vidette
Cavalry. Joshua was a retiring man,
with little visible temper and of a good disposition.
This family was recorded on the
1860 census in Lebanon, DeKalb Co., AL, the 1880 census in Township 9, DeKalb
Co., AL., and the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Van Buren, DeKalb Co., AL

Graves and wife, Mary Jane (Ellenberg) Graves.
According to the inscription on the chimney, the house was built in
1884.
James Graves (31) was born in Oct.
1832 (according to the 1900 census) in Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL (or
possibly in Blount Co., AL), and died after 1900. He married Tapinus Griffin about 1853. She was born about 1837 in GA, and died between 1880 and
1900. They were recorded on the
1860-1880 censuses in DeKalb Co., AL.
James married second Frances ‑‑‑‑‑‑
about 1897. They were recorded on the
1900 census in Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL; they lived next door to his son
Lincoln and his family.
James served during the Civil War
in the Union Army, Co. G, 1st Alabama and Tennessee Regt., Vidette
Cavalry. There is a headstone in Providence
Hill Cem., DeKalb Co., which bears this information and is probably his
grave. Also serving in the same company
were his brothers, Joshua, Henry, and Alexander. (R‑14, R‑25, R‑200)

Henry Graves (32) was born 4 July
1834 in Blount Co., AL, died 27 July 1916 in Foley, Baldwin Co., AL, and was
buried at Mt. Pleasant Cem. on Sand Mountain a few miles from Ten Broeck,
DeKalb Co., AL. He was reared in Big
Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL, near Collinsville. He married Nancy Margaret Jones, called Margaret, daughter of
George Washington Jones, on 9 Oct. 1853[31]
in DeKalb Co., AL in a ceremony performed by Rev. Samuel L. Smith. After their marriage, they continued to live
in the vicinity of the Hiram Graves homestead.
Margaret was born 8 Dec. 1838 in DeKalb Co., AL, died 10 (or 16) July
1899 in DeKalb Co., and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cem., near Groveoak, AL.
Henry's Civil War pension papers
show he was buried at Oak Grove, DeKalb Co., AL, which contradicts the above
burial information.
In or about 1897, he and his wife
moved to Sand Mountain. After Margaret
died, he went to live with his children, mainly Charlsie Bell. They had moved near the "Gipson
Stand", known as the location of U. V. Gipson's home and place of business
a few miles west of Fyffe, AL. Henry
lived among his children first here and later in south Alabama where the Bells
moved, and at Albertville, AL, where the Gipsons moved. Henry was living in Baldwin Co., AL, at the
time of his death, but was returned to DeKalb Co. for burial. Henry was of a kind and gracious
disposition, and gregarious in his affection towards children.
Henry, with his three brothers
previously mentioned, served during the Civil War in the Union Army, 1st
Alabama and Tennessee Regt., Vidette Cavalry.
The family of Margaret Jones,
Henry's wife, is an interesting one.
Two brothers went to Sand Valley, between Collinsville and Gadsden, AL,
around 1815 to 1820. They were George
Washington Jones and Abraham Jones. The
children of the former were: Margaret
Jones Graves, Dicy Jones, Abe Jones, and Renee Jones Green. The children of the
latter were: William Conner Jones, Wat
Jones, Fannie Jones Gilbreath, Dicy Jones Gilbreath, Sara Jones Swann, and
Ellen Jones Chumley. Their descendants
are numerous throughout DeKalb Co. and vicinity.

Alexander Graves (33) was born
about 1838 in Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL, died 16 Jan. 1916, and was
buried in Corinth Cem., Fyffe, DeKalb Co., AL.
He grew up in the Valley, married there, and settled on a nearby farm
given him by his father. It is believed
that most, if not all, of his older brothers and sisters were born in Blount
Co., AL. He first married Mary Jane
Elizabeth Carns, daughter of David Rice Carns, on 4 Aug. 1859 by William B.
Beeson, Justice of the Peace. She was
born in Sept. 1838 in AL, and died between 1900 and 1910.
An interesting story was told about
Mary by her grandson, Aubrey E. Graves, as related to him by his father,
William Joshua Graves.
"Grandmother was noted for her homespun remedies for almost any
malady which befell the family of hers, and, undoubtedly, many of them proved
their worth all through the years with her large line of descendants. Also, she was a great believer in the
science of astrology and could tell her children exactly in what phase of the
moon to plant corn, when to butcher hogs, when to shear their sheep or make
their soap. Our father inherited this
trait to some extent but never to the making of it a fine art, which
grandmother did. But it worked
exceedingly well in some cases and, of course, in some cases it failed."
About 1890, or perhaps a little
earlier, Alexander moved to Sand Mountain and settled at a large spring a few
miles north of Fyffe. He received mail
at old White Oak post office. He bought
a large tract of land, and his son William bought 80 acres of land from him and
another son Hiram bought 160 acres adjoining William's farm.
Alexander was a farmer and a
Primitive Baptist ("hardshell") preacher. After he settled on the mountain, he preached there and also made
periodic trips back to the valley to preach.
He would leave his family on weekends and ride a "hump-back"
mule to the valley, which was no short trip, and there preach for the sheer
love of his calling and without the expectation of ever receiving a penny by
way of recompense. Many were the marriages
at which he officiated, and many were the families he consoled at the last
rites for loved ones.
Following the death of his first
wife, Mary, in later years he married Lucy (‑‑‑‑‑‑)
Brannon about 1910. She was born about
1841 in GA. They separated before his death, although they were recorded

Mary (“Polly”) Graves (34) was born
about 1840 in DeKalb Co., AL, and died after May 1910, probably in Corinth,
DeKalb Co., AL. Mary’s age was listed
as 10 in 1850, but varied from census to census. She married George Roden, son of Vincent Roden and Sarena ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
about 1857. He was born in May 1833 in
TN, and died after May 1910, probably in Corinth, AL. This family was recorded on the 1860 census in Guntersville,
Marshall Co., AL, the 1870 census in Attalla, Etowah Co., AL, the 1880 census
in Marshall Co., AL, and the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Corinth, AL. In 1910, George and Mary lived with son
Vincent and daughter-in-law Eliza. In
1900 and 1910, Mary stated that of her nine children five were living. It is believed that all their children lived
their lives either in DeKalb Co. or nearby.
Many of the grandchildren lived there and in Chattanooga, TN.
A picture of Polly and some of her
family is shown below. (R‑200)

Martha Graves (36) was born in Dec.
1843 in DeKalb Co., AL, and died after 1920, probably in Bayou, Baxter Co.,
AR. She married William Hunter Wilson,
a widower with one child, on 25 Dec. 1870[32]
in DeKalb Co., AL. He was born about
1841 in SC. Shortly after their
marriage they left DeKalb Co. and settled in the small village of Vidette,
Fulton Co., AR. They were apparently
successful planters and homeowners there.
However, on the night of Dec. 20, 1893, Hunter Wilson was killed in a
robbery in which his savings were taken, his house was burned, and his wife
barely survived. The story of this
tragic event has been well told by their son, William, in a written account of
6 or 7 pages. (R‑200)

Frances Jane (“Fannie”) Graves (38)
was born 7 April 1847 in Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL, died there 12 Sept.
1932, and was buried in Providence Hill Cem., DeKalb Co., near Collinsville,
AL She married Hiram Thomas Elenburg
(or Ellenburg), son of Larkin Elenburg, on 13 June 1870. He was born 24 Aug. 1848 in AL, died 11
March 1929 in DeKalb Co., AL, and was also buried in Providence Hill Cem.
The Elenburgs were prosperous
farmers and at one time owned 360 acres of rich creek bottom land. Like the Templetons, they had a huge larder
stocked with provisions of all kinds, which tempted the kin as well as
passers-by to pause for a meal and perhaps a few days visit. People were always welcome there. The home was furnished with a beautiful
organ, a rare item in those days, and Mary played it.
Both Fannie and Thomas possessed a
keen sense of humor, and those visiting and passing were treated to a rural,
somewhat primitive, kind of jocular humor so much admired among these early
people.
They were Republicans, as were
practically all of the Hiram Graves clan.
They were also members of the Primitive Baptist Church, so common among
the descendants of John Graves (b. 1779).
Fannie had dark hair and was of
medium build. She was a friendly person
and liked to talk.
Many of the descendants of this
large family still live in DeKalb and nearby Marshall counties in AL, although
many have migrated to TX, OK, and AK.

Artha Ann Graves (39) was born 27
Feb. 1853 in DeKalb Co., AL, on the Hiram Graves homestead in Big Wills Valley,
died 7 Aug. 1927, and was buried in Providence Hill Baptist Church Cem., DeKalb
Co., AL. She married John L. Templeton
on 28 Dec. 1870 in DeKalb Co., AL. He
was born 24 July 1847, died 24 April 1922, and was also buried in Providence
Hill Cem. This family was recorded on
the 1880 census in DeKalb Co., AL, and the 1900-1920 censuses in Van Buren,
DeKalb Co., AL. In 1900 and 1910, Artha
stated that of her twelve children nine were living.
They were closely associated with
the Elenburgs (the family of Arthy's older sister, Mary Jane), who also lived
near the Hiram Graves’ home. The
Templetons lived there for a while and then moved to the Hiram B. “Uncle Bud”
Graves’ farm at Edward's Bridge near Collinsville when Uncle Bud's family moved
to Sand Mountain.
Their home was noted for its
hospitality, abundance and quality of food, and a knack for preparing it for
the table, according to some of the older people who had the good fortune to
visit in this home. We are told that they
slaughtered as many as 14 hogs in a day, entertained four or five preachers at
one time, and had a splendid peach orchard from which the girls canned hundreds
of cans of peaches in a season. They
eventually owned 196 acres of land.
For the most part, it is believed
the Templeton descendants have continued to live in DeKalb Co., AL, and
adjoining AL counties.
A picture of Arthy, John, and
family is shown below. (R‑200)

Hiram Beeson Graves (41), known to his close acquaintances
as "Uncle Bud", was born in Jan. 1856[33]
in Big Wills Valley, DeKalb Co., AL, died 30 June 1915, and was buried in
Providence Hill Cem. near Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL, where many of the early
Graves family members were buried. He
first married Dollie Smith on 3 Feb. 1882[34]
in DeKalb Co., AL. He lived and reared
his family by his first wife in Wills Valley.
He worked on his father's farm until he married, then moved into the
house with his parents and lived there several years. Later, he built his home on a large tract of land he had acquired
at Edward's Bridge, near Collinsville, AL.
It was here that his daughter, Myrtie, was born, and that his first wife
died.
|
|
Following Dollie's death, he
married second Marinda Emeline Chandler, daughter of Daniel C. Chandler and
Evaline Keener, on 10 Aug. 1898 in DeKalb Co., AL. She was born about 1873 in AL, and died 9 May 1932 in DeKalb Co.,
AL. The Templetons bought his house
around 1900, and he moved to Sand Mountain and bought a small store in Fyffe
then owned by Vincent Roden and James Graves.
Here he purchased a large tract of adjoining land and entered the
mercantile business.
From a small store and a small
business, this establishment prospered.
The store was enlarged and Uncle Bud became postmaster at Fyffe. He was a man of few words but had an acumen
for business. Soon his son, Wilbur,
joined him in the enterprise, and it became Graves & Son, located in a
large building across the road from the little store and dwelling. Wilbur built himself a house nearby and
lived there for many years. At Uncle
Bud's death, Wilbur became the owner of the business.
Uncle Bud’s picture is shown above. (R‑1, R‑200)
