DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND MARGERY HARVEY

OF RANDOLPH CO., NC

GENERATION 1

John Graves (1) was born about 1740 in VA, and died in 1811.  According to Miss Laura L. Walker (from information originally supplied by Mrs. Nellie (Cox) Beane), John was born in England.  However, according to R‑50, the statement that John was born in England probably came from someone who re-copied copies of notes of Phanney Graves (b. 1803) who stated her grandfather, John Graves, was from a John Graves, born in England, who came to America about 1635.  The year of 1635 got changed through re-copying to 1735 or 1755 or somewhere in between.  There is no information as to who may have a copy of the original notes of Phanney Graves.  R‑50 states that John Graves came to NC with explorers of the same last name, some sons of Thomas Graves of Spotsylvania Co., VA.  They came to the area by 1755.  He married Margery Harvey, also said to be from VA.  John and Margery lived on Bumper’s Fork of Little River.  This 312 acres of land was sold in 1822, after Margery was deceased, by sons Leonard and Samuel to Silas Moffitt (Randolph Co. Deed Bk. 14, p. 214).  This land adjoined Leonard, Samuel, and William Bolling.

Per R‑210, which cites the Randolph Geneaolgical Journals, the name of John Graves’ wife is rendered as Margery in his 1811 will and in an 1815 tax roll, as Margere on the 1820 tax roll, and as Marge in a 1789 deed.

John’s will was dated 5 Jan. 1811, and probated in Nov. 1811 in Randolph Co., NC (Will Book 3, p. 311).  Margery and their son Samuel were executors of the will.  Beneficiaries were wife Margery, daughters Mary and Elizabeth, sons Samuel, William, Leonard, and John Jr.  Richard, a witness to the will, had shared a land grant with John Graves, Sr., so apparently had received his share of the estate previously.  Not all of the following 8 children are proven.  There are obvious discrepancies between the accounts and possibilities given in the book by Lillian Sheppard and that by Aubrey Graves.

The first William Graves listed below died in late Dec. 1791 or early 1792.  In a will dated 30 Dec. 1791 he gave his land to his brother Leonard, and personal possessions to his brother Samuel and his sister Mary Anne (“Anne”).  According to R‑50 and R‑210, William obtained land grant No. 401 from the state of North Carolina on 18 Aug. 1787, registered 12 Dec. 1788 (Warrant No. 208, surveyed 29 Dec. 1786), for 300 acres of land on the Little River in Randolph Co.  If the entry date for this land grant was 1786, then he must have been born by 1765 at least, according to R‑50.  William Graves may also be placed in Randolph Co. by a signed 1785-1788 petition regarding court house location.  If he had a family, they predeceased him.  The last son born, William, was named after his older brother.

Per R‑50, Elizabeth Graves married Michael Harvey, who may have presented John Graves’ will in court in 1811.  If Elizabeth was married in 1811, she was probably born by 1791.  Leonard sold land in 1794 (the 312 acres willed to him by brother William).  Having to be at least 21 years of age in 1794, he was born by 1773.  Anne and Mary Graves, previously listed separately, are, according to R‑50, one daughter named Mary Anne Graves.  In 1794, she witnessed a deed as Mary Hudson.  If she was at least 21 years of age at this time, then she was born by 1773.

It is believed that there may be a connection between this family and the families of Peter Graves, page 90, 1978 Graves Family Newsletter, and William B. Graves, page 69, 1979 Graves Family Newsletter?

Also, on pages 105 and 107, 1978 newsletter is information on the descendants of Samuel L. Graves, b.c. 1816, NC, d. 25 March 1869, Texas Twp., DeWitt Co., IL.  He probably first married Molly Mann, married second Mary Wright, then married Sarah Ann (Baily?) Davis.  Since one of his grandchildren was named Zilpha, perhaps he was related to John Graves of Randolph Co.  (R‑1, R‑7, R‑9, R‑18, R‑44, R‑50, R‑201, R‑202, R‑210)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES AND MARGERY HARVEY (1)

Samuel Graves (2) was probably born before 1764/5 in Randolph Co., NC.  The estimated date of birth is based on 1815 tax list, “0 poll tax,” making him over 50 years of age, or born by 1764/5.  He died 1830-1840, possibly in Clay Co., IN, or while enroute.  He married Zylphia Steed, daughter of Nathaniel Steed and Susannah Franklin of VA.  Nathaniel Steed was the son of John Steed, Sr. and Ann Hill.  Zylphia was born about 1762, and died in April 1850 in Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN.  She was 88 when she died.  (She was listed in the Mortality Book for 1850.)  Samuel is said to have sold his land between 1815-1822 in preparation for his move to IN.  By 1831 the family and many others started from Randolph Co., NC to Clay Co., IN by horseback train.

As written in R‑210 and per R‑2, Samuel Graves is mentioned in contemporary records as Samuel Graves Esquire.  He may be placed in Randolph Co., NC by deeds of 1787, 1788 and 1791, a militia record of March 1789, census records of 1790, 1800, and 1810, marriage bonds of 1799 and 1819, court records of 1793 and bastardy bonds of 1812, 1814, 1835, and 1839, tax rolls of 1803, 1815 and 1820, and a voting roll of 1817.  He was a constable in 1788.  He owned considerable property, including 612 acres on the Little River, 250 acres on the Uharie River, and 100 acres on Reedy Creek.

The following children are believed by R‑2 to be the children of Samuel and Zylphia, but only Mary Ann has been proven to be a child.  According to R‑50, Samuel Sr. and Zylphia had a total of 11 children, eight born by 1800.  The 1790 census lists 2 sons and 1 daughter.  The 2 sons were probably Samuel, Jr. and Gillum (thought by some to be a child of John and Margery Graves) Graves.  The 1800 census lists 3 sons and 5 daughters.  This son was probably John Graves who married Annie ("Jonsy") Spencer.  Samuel Graves, Sr. deeded 262 acres of land to John in 1822 (Bk. 17, p. 356) which was witnessed by Mark and Anney Bolling.  Mark Bolling was the brother of Talitha who married Samuel, Jr.  It is said that John could walk 1¼ miles from his house to the village of Seagrove where he somestimes served as a magistrate.  Per R‑50, Jane Graves is a probable daughter but no information on a Henry Graves.  R‑50 also suggests that some of the children attributed to Samuel Graves and Zylphia may actually be the children of Samuel Graves, Jr.  (R‑9, R‑17, R‑44, R‑50, R‑201)

Richard (“Dickey”) Graves (4) was born some time between 1765 to 1769[3], in Randolph Co., NC, and died 15 June 1849 in Randolph Co., NC.  Randolph Geneological Journal, Vol. 16, No. 3, p. 15, cites:  Richard Graves, 80 years old, d. June 1849 after a ten day illness; cf. 1850 Mortality Schedule of Randolph Co., NC.  He was buried in the original Graves Cemetery which is located in Randolph Co., ¼ mile west of State Road 134 and ¼ mile north of State Road 1118 on an unpaved road.  The graveyeard reportedly contains 19 graves.  R-50 states that according to some information, Richard and his wife were buried on land owned by their son, Samuel.  He married Hannah Fincher, daughter of Benjamin Fincher.  Benjamin was a Quaker, joining the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange Co., NC, in 1755, with his family.  Hannah was born about 1769, listed as age 81 on the 1850 census, then living in the household of her son Samuel Graves.  She died 9 Nov. 1856 in NC at age 87.  They moved to the Seagrove area by 1794 and settled on Little River in the southern part of the county.  All their children were born in Randolph Co., although the information on their son Richard is just that he was born in NC.  Richard’s home plantation was purchased in 1794 from his brother, Leonard, who inherited the land in 1791 from his brother William Graves.  William had obtained the land by a 1787 grant from the state.  Richard then deeded this land in 1841 to his son Samuel.  Richard and Hannah moved in with Samuel and his wife Rachel.

The book Fincher in the USA, 1683-1900, compiled by Evelyn Davis Fincher and Ann Wilson Fincher, gives much information on the Fincher family.  Hannah Fincher is descended from Francis Fincher, a Quaker from Worcester, England, who arrived in Philadelphia, PA, 7 mo., 28th day, 1683 (May 28, 1683) aboard the ship “Bristol Comfort” accompanied by his second wife, Mary (Achelley) Fincher, his small children and servants.  The descent of Hannah was: Francis1, John2, Jonathan3, Benjamin4, Hannah5.  Benjamin was born about 1740 in Chester Co., PA, and died 19 March 1808 in Randolph Co., NC, leaving a wife, 2 sons, and 5 daughters.

As written in R‑210, Richard Graves may be placed in Randolph Co., NC by documentary evidence dating from 1785, including a signed petition, a law suit of 1789, census records of 1790, 1800, 1830, and 1840, deeds of 1791-1841, militia records of 1801-1802, a will of 1811, tax rolls of 1803, 1815, 1820, and 1828, voting records of 1817, and marriage bonds for his son Benjamin in 1822 and daughter Nancy in 1825.

Local Randolph Co. history gives information that two of Richard’s sons, Benjamin and Samuel, remained in NC and four other sons went West.  It is said thay had six boys and six girls in total.  According to R‑50, Mary Anne and Nancy are most often identified as daughters of Richard and Hannah, which is confirmed by letters and other information.  In addition to the children listed below, Cindy Holsapple-Boone says that Jane Graves (#16) who married Randolph Bowling was also a child of this Richard Graves.  However, R‑50 believes Jane is probably a daughter of Richard’s brother Samuel.  The birth order is unclear.  (R‑1, R‑4, R‑7, R‑12, R‑13, R‑29, R‑30, R‑31, R‑44, R‑50, R‑84, R‑85, R‑87, R‑89, R‑90, R‑201, R‑202, R‑210)

William Graves (9) was born about 1794, presumably in Randolph Co., NC, and died after 10 Sept. 1850, probably in Indiana.  He married Sarah Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was also born about 1794, and died after 1850 according to the 1850 census.  On the 1820 census, a William Graves, age 26-45, one female 16-26, and two males, 0-10 are listed.  According to R‑201, William was listed with six children in the 1830 census for Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN.  William bought two pieces of land in Clay Co. early in 1836 and sold them in Dec. 1836.  On the 1850 census for Sterling Twp., Crawford Co., IN, a William Graves, age 56, born North Carolina and Sarah Graves, age 56, born North Carolina are shown following an entry for John (#60) and Catharine Graves.

There is some question that the John Graves below is the son of this William Graves; William Graves was listed as the father on John’s death certificate; no mother’s name was given.  R‑34 believes that the John Graves below was the son of William Graves (#26).  (R‑29, R‑201)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL GRAVES (2) AND ZYLPHIA STEED

Samuel Graves, Jr. (10) was born in 1785-1786 per R‑50, but others say between 1800 and 1810 in Randolph Co., NC.  He married Mary M. Mann on 28 March 1828 in Vigo Co., IN.  She was born 1810-1820.  According to R‑50, this man may be confused with another person.  A Samuel Graves, Jr. is listed in 1815 Randolph Co. with 240 acres-Little River.  Would a man born 1800 to 1810 list acres in 1815?  This Samuel Graves, Jr. who listed acres/taxes in 1815 is belived by R‑50 to be the Samuel Graves deeded 250 acres of land in 1807.  If this is the Samuel Graves born by 1785/6, then he would be about 21 years old in 1807.  The Samuel Graves born by 1785/6 married Talitha Bolling (Bolling family history) and went to IN.  The following children were listed in the 1840 census for Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN.  The Samuel Graves recorded on the 1860 census in Van Buren Twp., IN was Samuel (#216), son of John Graves and Mary Smitherman.  (R‑50, R‑17, R‑201)

Children - Graves

   67.  son, b. 1810-1820.

   68.  daughter, b. 1825-1830.

   69.  daughter, b. 1830-1835.

   70.  daughter, b. 1830-1835.

   71.  son, b. 1835-1840.

   72.  son, b. 1835-1840.

   73.  daughter, b. 1835-1840.

Gillum (or Gilliam) Graves (11) was born about 1785/6 in Randolph Co., NC, and probably died before 1850 when Sarah was recorded on the 1850 census in Boone Co., IA living with her son Henry.  He married Sarah Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1794 in NC, and died after 1870 in Boone Co., IA.  She was recorded on the 1850-1870 censuses in Boone Co., IA.  In 1854, a Sarah Graves (living in Iowa) sold land in Clay Co., IN to Henry Graves, son of Gillum’s brother Samuel (#10).  Gillum is listed on the 1815 tax list for Randolph Co.  He witnessed deeds in 1815 and 1818.  (R‑44, R‑50, R‑51, R‑201)

Children - Graves

+74.  William Graves, b. 1814, m. Sarah Lucas, 1839, d.c. 1844.

+75.  Henry Marshall Graves, b.c. 1818, m. Survilla Hull, 8 Feb. 1855, d. 1873.

   76.  daughter, b. 1830-1840.

   77.  daughter, b. 1830-1840.

   78.  son, died in NC.

Mary Ann Graves (13) was born 5 April 1793 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 10 Oct. 1831, while enroute from NC to Indiana by horseback train (soon after the group had crossed the border of either Ohio or Indiana), and was buried by the roadside in either Ohio or Indiana.  She married Stephen A. Lowdermilk, son of John Harrison Lowdermilk and his first wife Mary Elliott, on 25 June 1812 in Randolph Co., NC.  He was born 15 May 1793 in Randolph Co., near Asheboro, died 15 Sept. 1872 near Ashboro in Clay Co., IN, and was buried in Cade Cem., Perry Twp., Clay Co., IN.  Ashboro, IN and the Mt. Olive Church near there were supposedly named by Stephen and his son William for the town and church near their NC home.  An old record says “John Lowdermilk was a large slave holder and on account of Stephen’s anti-slavery convictions he was disinherited by his parents.”  All the children of Mary Ann and Stephen were born in Randolph Co., NC.

On arriving in Indiana, Stephen first settled on the Eel River, but shortly afterwards moved to Jackson township, section 29, and built a cabin.  He later went on foot to Vincennes, IN, to enter his first 40 acres of land from the government, and he added more later, making a total of 150 acres.  It was at this time he met and married his second wife, Mrs. Sarah (‑‑‑‑) Bolin, widow of Richard T. Bolin, about 1838 in Clay Co., IN.  Sarah was born 3 Oct. 1803, died 9 Sept. 1871, and was buried in Union Cem.  He was an active Methodist, his cabin being used for the first church services.  For 23 years he was a justice of the peace, without having a single judgement reversed.  He was a life-long supporter of Republican principles and was importantly connected with the organization of the county and township.  He and Sarah had four children, and their eldest son, Calvin, was reared on the farm and obtained but little education.

Stephen Lowdermilk was recorded on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses in Clay Co., IN.  A James W. Lowdermilk, age 19, born Indiana, was listed with the family in 1850.  It is unclear whether he was the last child of Mary and Stephen; subsequent censuses list a James W. Boling, b.c. 1831 in Indiana, who may be a son of Stephen’s second wife Sarah by her first marriage.  James W. Boling’s children married into the next generation of Graves’ descendants so Boling’s descendants are listed in the genealogy for clarity.  (R‑6, R‑9, R‑201, R‑210)

Margery (or Margere or "Marge") Graves (15) was born about 1802 (or before 1801), probably in Randolph Co., NC, and probably died in the mid-1820’s (about 1825)  She was probably a daughter of Samuel Graves who performed the marriage (or was the bondsman listed on the marriage license).  She witnessed an 1821 deed from Samuel Graves, Sr.

She married Miles Beaman (or Myles Beaman[5]) on 3 Jan. 1819 in Randolph Co., NC[6].  He was born about 1800-1801 in NC, and died after 1870, probably in West Florida.  He is listed in the 1854 school census of Nacogdoches Co., TX, the 1857 tax list of the county, and the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses of Nacogdoches Co.  He was listed as a farmer in the 1880 census for Nacogdoches Co.  He was a son of Abraham Beaman (b.c. 1772, d. 19 Oct. 1848, Pike Co., AL[7]) and Rhoda Godwin? (b.c. 1773, d. 29 Feb. 1864). Miles married second Sarah Jane (‑‑‑‑‑‑) Hightower in 1826 or 1828 in NC.  She was born about 1801 (or 1808) in TN, died about 1875 in Nacogdoches Co., TX, and was buried in Chireno Cem., Chireno, Nacogdoches Co., TX (or San Jacinto Co., TX per R‑66).  Sarah was listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and the 1861 and 1862 tax lists of Nacogdoches Co., TX.  She married third John Speer.

Mrs. Lois Barnett Cooksey, a great great granddaughter of Miles, wrote in January 1980:  “The Beamans and Barnetts are very interesting because of inter‑marriage around 1849-1855 and also because of some sort of a family feud that made Landy Barnett desert a young second wife about to have a baby [Josephine Hightower] and Miles Beaman desert a wife (Sarah) who just had twins.  Both men went back to Pike County, Alabama.  Landy Barnett married a Celia Williams in Pike County in 1852, and Miles Beaman married a Susan Hancock in 1862.  When or where either man died is not known.”

Miles Beaman married third Susan R. E. Hancock on 30 March 1862 in Lowndes Co., AL recorded on p. 546 of Alabama Marriages, 1800-1920.

Sarah had a daughter by her first marriage, Josephine Hightower, born about 1824 in Arkansas according to R‑65.  (R‑62, R‑63, R‑64, R‑65, R‑66, R‑67, R‑211)

Children - Beaman

+90.  Rhoda Beaman, b. 12 (or 17) Nov. 1819, m(1) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Crawford, m(2) John F. Davis (?), m(3) Benjamin F. Haney, d. 31 Dec. 1884.

Jane Graves (16) was born about 1800 in Randolph Co., NC, and died after 1860 in Washington Co., IN.  She married Randolph Boling (listed alternately as Bowling, Bolling, Bollen, or Bolin), son of John Bollen (or Bowling) and Lucielle ("Lucy") Randolph, about 1816 in NC.  (One source said he was son of Benjamin Bolling and Lucille Randolph.)  He was born about 1800 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 13 Feb. 1849 in Washington Co., IN.  He is believed to have been a Quaker.  They moved from NC to Indiana about 1826.

Rather than being a daughter of Samuel Graves (#2), it is possible that Jane was a daughter of Richard Graves (#4) and Hannah Fincher, or possibly of Richard’s father John.

R‑70, who is descended from Jesse Boling, brother of Randolph, through Jesse's son Larkin, wrote: "My g-g-grandfather, Larkin, spelled the last name Boling (I have his Bible) and his father, Jesse, was Boling."  She also wrote: "I would dearly love to find out who the parents of Lucy Randolph are.  I also believe the Graves line was originally from VA as were the Randolphs and Bolings/Bollings.  The 1790 NC census (Hillsborough Dist., Orange Co.) included Thomas Redding (Reddings married into Boling lines) and a Robert Graves Jr.  Also, in Sussex Co., VA on the 1787 personal property tax list was Sarah Graves, John Graves, William Graves, along with several Felts names (Pattie Felts was married to Benjamin Boling).  I think they are all related."

At least the first 6 children listed below were born in Randolph Co., NC, the seventh in NC, and all the others in Washington Co., IN.

The following was a typed record (submitted by R‑43) made by Attorney David W. Bolen, Hillsville, VA.  It was addressed to Miss Vinnie Frances Denny (#1552) and postmarked 14 Sept. 1921:

“Family of Randolph, son of John Bollen

Randolph Bollen, son of John, and grandson of Benjamin, married Jane Graves in Randolph Co., NC, and soon after their marriage moved to Washington Co., IN where they reared a family of 16 children, the youngest of whom is the present Mark Boling of Ladega, IN.  This Randolph Boling reared a daughter named Sallie who married a Mr. Hattabaugh, and the present Mrs. Pollock of Indianapolis is a daughter of this marriage.

Another daughter of Randolph Boling whose name was Clarissy married a Mr. Denny but my notes do not show the relation to Miss Vinnie Frances Denny to this marriage.  (I am giving her a copy of these notes with request that she explain her relation and that of her family to this marriage.).”  (R‑43, R‑68, R‑69, R‑70)

John Graves (17) was born about 1799 in NC, and died about 1862.  John married Anne Johnston Spencer, daughter of Johnston Spencer and Elizabeth Anne Tucker of Randolph Co., NC.  She was born about 1805 in NC, and died after 1870.  She was known as “Annie” or “Jonsy” according to R‑50.  Previous information indicated that John married Amy Tucker, daughter of Nathaniel Tucker and Martha Lawrence, however that seems to be incorrect.  Elizabeth Anne (Tucker) Spencer and Nathaniel Tucker were brother and sister, so Annie and Amy Tucker would have been first cousins.  According to R‑60, Amy Tucker was listed as a single woman in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses, living with her brother Jesse Tucker in Montgomery Co., NC.  R‑61 also states that Amy Tucker never married and lived with Jesse until she died.  The 1850 Randolph Co., NC census lists John, 51; Annie, 43; Willis, 27; Sarah, 25; Jane, 22; Polly, 19; Richard, 16; Lucy, 12; Thena, 9; Martha, 6; Calvin, 5; John C., 8 mo.  The 1870 Randolph Co., NC census lists Anna Graves, 65, and Caroline Graves, 21.  They were family 92; family 88 was her daughter Jane Luther as head of household; family 91 was Ransom Vuncannon and granddaughter Mary Luther; family 93 was her son Calvin Graves and his wife, and family 94 was her son Willis Graves.

Based on old correspondence, the Graves family apparently lived in Randolph Co., NC, near Montgomery, in the Pisgah area.

John's will did not list Pauline among his children, so it is possible she died before 1862.  His son, John, probably died young, since the will refers to Calvin as his youngest son.  (R‑10, R‑50, R‑56, R‑60, R‑61)

Elizabeth Graves, 5 July 1863.  This Elizabeth Graves is the dau. of Samuel Graves and Rachel Luther according to R‑50.  There were two different Calvin Graves who married two different Elizabeth Graves; it is unclear if the marriage date listed is for this Calvin Graves.

   117.   John Clark Graves, b.c. 1850.  Died around 6 years of age and bur. on grandfather Johnston Spencer’s farm in Why Not, NC.

+118.   Caroline Ada Graves, b.c. 1851, m. Noah Luck, d. 1877.

Rebecca Graves (18) was born about 1800 in NC, and died after 1870, probably in Clay Co., IN.  She married John Williams on 29 Oct. 1819 in Randolph Co., NC.  He was born about 1795 in NC, and died after 1870.  They moved from Randolph Co., NC to Indiana, and were recorded on the 1850 census in Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN, dwelling 15, page 293.  He was a farmer.  Their first seven children were born in NC, and the last four in Indiana.  This family was also recorded on the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Van Buren Twp., IN.

There is no proof that Rebecca was a daughter of Samuel Graves.  However, in the 1850 census for Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN, the family was recorded in dwelling 15, page 293, two houses away from Saul and Zylphy Vuncannon in dwelling 17, page 293.  Zylpha (Graves) Vuncannon was a daughter of Samuel Graves.  In 1850 they also lived close to Isaac Graves, brother of Zylpha and son of Samuel, who was in dwelling 122, page 300, of the same census.  It is also interesting to see that Rebecca and John had a son listed as Drewry (Andrew Jackson Graves) in the 1850 census, as did Isaac Graves.  If Rebecca was not a daughter of Samuel Graves, she was almost certainly a daughter of one of his brothers.  (R‑52)

Isaac Graves (20) was born about 1808 in NC (probably Randolph Co.), died about 1854 at age 46 in Jefferson Twp., Andrew Co., MO, and was buried there in Green Cem.  He married Elizabeth Dickens (or Deakins or Decking per R‑17), daughter of John Dickens (or Deakins) and Elizabeth Committ, on 2 Jan. 1832 in Putnam Co., IN.  She was born 1815-1818 in KY, died 1863 or 1864 at age 48 in Andrew Co., MO, and was buried near Isaac in Green Cem., Andrew Co., MO.  Isaac probably moved with his parents and others from Randolph Co., NC to Clay Co., IN about 1831.  They apparently moved from Indiana to McLean Co., IL in 1852, and then to Andrew Co., MO by 1854.  All their children except the last one seem to have been born in Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN.  They were in the 1850 census for Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN, dwelling 122, page 300.  Living with them in 1850 was Sarah King, age 17.  (R‑17, R‑201)

Drewry W. Graves (22) was born 19 Nov. 1813 in NC, probably in Randolph Co., died 17 April 1883 in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., NE, and was buried in Pleasant Ridge Cem., Plattsmouth.  He first married Lucinda ‑‑‑‑‑‑, possibly in 1849 or 1850.  She was born 15 July 1820 in Indiana, died 4 Dec. 1863 in Plattsmouth, and was also buried in Pleasant Ridge Cem.  He married second Laura A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1815 in NY, and died after 1880.  Drewry sold land in 1840, bought land in 1841, and had his property sold to satisfy claims against him in 1843, all in Clay Co., IN.  A newspaper account in The Plattsmouth Journal, Dec. 5, 1927, concerning the death of Drewry’s eldest child, Drewry M. Graves, states that the Drewry W. Graves family came from eastern Iowa with the Mormon migration to Utah, and when the Mormons arrived at Canesville (now Council Bluffs, IA) in 1855, they stopped there for the winter.  Learning that Samuel Martin, a distant relative of Drewry W. Graves’ wife, lived in Plattsmouth, the Graves family went there and settled.  Drewry was listed as a brick mason and stone mason in 1860 and 1870, and as a barber in the 1880 census.  (R‑201)

CHILDREN OF RICHARD GRAVES (4) AND HANNAH FINCHER

Elizabeth Graves (24) was born before 1790 in Randolph Co., NC, and died probably after 1843 based on the list of children.  She married Nathaniel King in 1818 in Randolph Co., NC (Book 1, p. 148).  He was born about 1796 in NC, and died after 1850 (listed on the 1850 census for Perry Co., AR).  This family migrated to central Arkansas by 1833, where they appear on the 1840 census for Conway Co. and the 1850 census for Perry Co.  Children Samuel through William were recorded with Nathaniel on the 1850 census, and children Mary Jane through William were born in AR.  The birth order for the children listed below was provided by R‑31 as written in his Volume II genealogy, King Family chapter, pp. 81-105.  (R‑31, R‑210)

   176.   William C. King, b.c. 1843.  May not be Elizabeth’s son based on birthdate.  Lived with his brother Richard’s family in 1870 in Higgins, Perry Co, AR.

Sarah (“Sallie”) Graves (25) was born about 1790 in NC, and died 25 Aug. 1851.  She married James Brookshire, son of Mannering Brookshire II and Prudence ‑‑‑‑‑‑, about 1805.  He was born about 1783 in Pendleton District, Anderson Co., SC (per R‑87) and died 19 March 1864, probably in Marshall Co., AL (per R‑85).

According to “Genealogical Abstracts from Reported Deaths from The Nashville Christian Advocate 1850-1851” by Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith, the following obituary appeared:

“SALLY BROOKSHIER daughter of Richard and Hannah Graves; born Randolph Co., N.C., Oct. 9, 1781; married James Brookshier, 1805 and moved to Ky., then to Rutherford Co., Tenn.; died August 25, 1851. Her daughter, PERMELIA CAROLINE BROOKSHIER, died Aug. 27, 1851.”

It appears that the birthdate for Sally is incorrect; Sally’s mother Hannah (Fincher) Graves was 81 on the 1850 census, born about 1769.  This family was recorded on the 1850 census in Marshall Co., AL, Roll M432-10, p. 253 on 13 Dec. 1850.  James was 67 and Sarah 60, both born NC.  Living with them were Rebecca, 23, Ellener J., 17, Permelia C., 17; their birthplaces were listed as AL.  Their first four children were born in NC, Graves
