DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GRAVES AND MATILDA SIMPSON OF KY

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Joseph Graves (1) was born about 1785[1] in KY, died in Sept. 1857 in Springfield, Washington Co., KY, and was buried 4 Sept. 1857 at St. Rose Church, Springfield, KY.  He married Matilda (or Clotilda) Simpson, daughter of James Simpson and Elizabeth Edelen, on 2 Nov. 1829 in Washington Co., KY.  She was born about 1804 or 1797[2] in KY, and was buried 26 Dec. 1892 at age 95 at St. Rose Church, Springfield.  Washington County Bicentennial History says (on p. 287), "When Joseph Edward's mother, Clotilda, became disabled, he and his wife, Tricy, took care of her physical and financial needs.  All the original papers are dated 1890 …."  She was listed in the 1850-1870 Kentucky censuses as Matilda.  The 1850 census says she was born in KY, while the other two list her birthplace as MD.  Joseph and Matilda were in the 1850 census for Washington Co., KY, and Matilda was head of household in the 1860 census for Washington Co., KY.  All children except the last 4 in the list below were in the 1850 and 1860 census records; the source of these four names is not known.

The 1830 census for Washington Co., KY, listed 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 20-30.  The 1840 census for Washington Co., KY, listed 2 males 5-10, 1 male 30-40 (probably a brother, brother-in-law, or son-in-law), 1 male 40-50, 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 30-40.

It may be that the family of Joseph Graves is closely related to that of William B. Graves of NC and other Graves families of Randolph Co., NC, since their descendants both settled in the same part of Indiana.  However, if this Graves family was from MD, then that is not the connection.  Another clue to a possible MD origin is that the family was apparently Roman Catholic, whereas none of the families from NC were known to be Catholic.

Joseph may have been a son of Charles Graves and Eleanor ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  Examination of the tax lists for Washington Co., KY by Anita Hoyer showed the only possibilities for the parents of Joseph as Charles Graves (died 1798) and Eleanor.  It appears that Joseph owned the land that Eleanor inherited from Charles, around 1815.  However, the tax records are incomplete, so this is not certain.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Peter Graves (8) was born about 1845 in KY, and died 2 April 1908 in KY.  He first married Mary Louise Payne.  He married second Mary Sally Payne on 8 Oct. 1889.  (R‑2)

Joseph Edward ("Ed") Graves (9) was born 23 Feb. 1848 in KY, and died 23 Sept. 1909.  He first married Teresa Payne Cissell.  He married second Tricie Ann Crabtree, daughter of Alfred Crabtree and Delphine Hayden, on 10 July 1884.  She was born in March 1863 in KY.  They were in the 1900 census for Springfield, Washington Co., KY.  He was a farmer.  All his children were born in KY.  (R‑2, R‑3)

James Paul Graves (10) was born 12 April 1850 near Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY, or 28 April 1850 in Washington Co., KY[4], and died 3 Nov. 1942 in Linton, Greene Co., IN.  He first married Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Mudd.  Connie Graves Hoyer remembers visiting her grandfather, James, and his wife Lizzie in KY.  She said they lived in an old shack in the woods.  She also recalls his suitcase of what were probably medicines that he peddled.  Anita Hoyer has a copy of an ad (undated) which lists James Graves, Springfield, KY, as an agent for Morgan's Hygienic Vegetable Oil Soap.

James married second Minerva A. Ballard on 15 Nov. 1870 near Bardstown, KY.  She was born 24 March 1852, and died of dropsy.  They moved to Osage Mission (later known as St. Paul), KS in 1881, and lived there for a few years.  They then settled in Daviess Co., IN, and then moved to Greene Co., IN in 1904, where James mined coal.  Minerva and James divorced some time around 1904.  (R‑1, R‑2)

[1] As support for Joseph's date of birth, R‑2 gives the following.  The 1850 census lists him as age 60 (born about 1790).  St. Rose church burial records show he was buried 4 Sept. 1857 at age 70 (born about 1787).  In a family photo album, Louis Graves, Jr. lists Joseph's birth date as 1785.

[2] According to R-2, Louise Donnelly in a letter says, "Mrs. Graves was buried from St. Rose's on 12/26/1892 age 95 (Matilda?)", giving a date of birth of about 1797.  Louise Seibert has her date of birth listed on family group sheet as about 1804.

[3] R-2 gives Etta Crouch as wife of Robert Kendrick Lanham, and R-3 gives her as wife of Robert Kendrick Graves.

[4] The 12 April date and place of birth was given by R-1, and the 28 April date and place was given by R-2.
