James Greaves left a will (proved
19 Feb. 1795) in which he refers to his ÒÉ. Natural son James Greaves begotten
by me on the body of Sarah DeeleyÓ and his wife Susannah as legatees. No other legatees. (This seems to mean that James only
married once, to Susannah, and his child be Sarah Deeley was out of wedlock.)
The researcher Richard Beaton
commented: ÒJames Greaves, Sr. seems to be the James Greaves mentioned in the
so-called Purefoy letter. Henry
Purefoy was the landowner in Shalstone in the mid 18th century. His letters have been edited and
published twice. In the letters
James is sometimes referred to as ÒJemmyÓ and is described as Òa very civil
fellowÓ. He is also recorded as a
juryman on the Court Baron, the local, copyhold court that managed the affairs
of the local manor. The Purefoys
owned Shalstone for centuries. If
this is James Greaves Sr., he would have moved from Shalstone to Hillesden in
the 1750/60Õs.Ó (R‑5)

Trafalgar (Capt. William Wright), and arrived in South Australia 6 Oct.
1849. However, R‑7 says he
emigrated to South Australia 26 Sept. 1848 aboard the Derwent under Capt. Innes
McPherson, arriving 23 Jan. 1849.
He died 17 Oct. 1878[2]
in Willaston, South Australia. His
grave is in the cemetery there, but no headstone could be located. It is said by R‑6 that his name
was Richard Greaves but he was called Thomas; his name is sometimes given as
Richard Thomas Greaves. He married
Harriet Kightley of Stoney Stratford, Bucks. (Her surname is also given as Kebaly (probably an incorrect
transcription) in the submitted records on the LDS FamilySearch.org website,
and as Kightly and Kiteley by others.)
It is believed by some that they married in South Australia; however,
the birth of children by 1846 indicates the marriage must have been in
England. According to R‑7,
they were born 20 June 1842 in St. Pancras, London, England. She may have been born as early as
1820, and died in 1916. He had
occupations of farmer, publican of the Gawler Hotel in Willaston (or the
Willaston Hotel in Gawler) from 1849-1851, and from April 12 to Dec. 2, 1857
was a 3rd Class Constable in the Water Police (he was discharged). The first 2 children listed below were
born in Buckinghamshire, England, and all the others in Willaston, South
