William Greaves (39) was born 14 April 1667 in Whitfield, Northamptonshire, England, first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He secondly married Susanna ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of Whitfield, Nhants.  She died in 1711.  They lived in Whitfield.

The map on the next page shows the area, mainly in Northamptonshire, where this family lived.  Whitfield is on the present A43 road, midway between Brackley and Syresham.  Haversham, Buckinghamshire, is off the map, just a little to the east of Abthorpe.  (R‑1, R‑5)

James (“Jemmy”) Greaves (70) was born about Aug. 1714 in Shalstone, Buckinghamshire, died 12 Feb. 1795, and was buried in Feb. 1795 in the church graveyard, Hillesden, Buckinghamshire.  He first married Susannah Burman on 28 Oct. 1742 in Buckinghamshire.  She was born 23 Oct. 1719 in Shalston, Northamptonshire, died 11 June 1795, and was buried in June 1795 in the church graveyard, Hillesden, Buckinghamshire.  He married second Sarah Deeley about 1764 in England.  She was born about 1725 in Buckinghamshire.

James Greaves left a will (proved 19 Feb. 1795) in which he refers to his “…. Natural son James Greaves begotten by me on the body of Sarah Deeley” and his wife Susannah as legatees.  No other legatees.  (This seems to mean that James only married once, to Susannah, and his child be Sarah Deeley was out of wedlock.)

The researcher Richard Beaton commented: “James Greaves, Sr. seems to be the James Greaves mentioned in the so-called Purefoy letter.  Henry Purefoy was the landowner in Shalstone in the mid 18th century.  His letters have been edited and published twice.  In the letters James is sometimes referred to as “Jemmy” and is described as “a very civil fellow”.  He is also recorded as a juryman on the Court Baron, the local, copyhold court that managed the affairs of the local manor.  The Purefoys owned Shalstone for centuries.  If this is James Greaves Sr., he would have moved from Shalstone to Hillesden in the 1750/60’s.”  (R‑5)

Thomas Greaves (171) was born in 1825.  He was supposedly from Buckinghamshire, England.  He arrived in South Australia before 1850, and died 17 Oct. 1878 in Willaston, South Australia.  His grave is in the cemetery there, but no headstone could be located.  He married Harriet Kightley of Stoney Stratford, Bucks.  It is suspected that he married in South Australia.  She died in 1916.  He had occupations of farmer, publican of the Gawler Hotel in Willaston from 1849-1851, and from April 12 to Dec. 2, 1857 was a 3rd Class Constable in the Water Police (he was discharged).  (R‑1, R‑2)

John Albert Greaves (174) was born 21 Sept. 1829 in Haversham, Buckinghamshire, England, died 6 June 1893, and was buried at Great Leighs, Essex, England.  He was a missionary to Sydney, Australia.  He married Agnes Mary Wilson on 18 Feb. 1857 in Moseley (which one?).  She was one of 18 children, was born in 1833 in Sherringham, Norfolk, England, and died in 1922.  (R‑1)

Edmund Greaves (258) was born in 1852, and died 15 Jan. 1879 of a heart attack at age 65 in Adelaide, South Austrarlia.  Conflicting information suggests he arrived in Australia in 1874; however, his death certificate shows his birth place as Gawler, South Australia.  He married Elizabeth Melina Langlois on 15 Jan. 1879 in Adelaide, South Australia.  She was from the Channel Islands.

Edmund was a farmer at the time of his marriage, mason’s laborer at the birth of his son Harold, and later in life a gardener at the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide.  (R‑2)
