William Graves (1) lived in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. He died intestate, and was buried at St. Peter's Church, Drogheda, Ireland. He married Grace ------, whose will was proved 19 Dec. 1672. She was buried next to her husband at St. Peter's.

It is believed that this William Graves may have been a son of Richard Graves of London, b. 1572, descended from the Graves family of Yorkshire and Mickleton Manor, Gloucestershire, England. There is information in that genealogy, however, that disputes this claim. (R-1)

22. Patience Boleyn, m. (Rt. Rev.) Robert Howard, 1724. She was sole heiress of her parents. He was Senior Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, Lord Bishop of Elphin. He succeeded his brother at Shelton, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, where the family had long been seated. He was a son of Ralph Howard, b. 1638, who succeeded at Shelton. He was M.C. 1667 at the College of Dublin and became professor of that University. He m. Catherine Sotheby of a very ancient family in Yorkshire. Ralph Howard's daughter Catherine m. Sir Thomas Molyneux. Ralph Howard's g-granddaughter m. Lord Frederick Howard, younger son of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. Ralph Howard's son, the Rt. Rev. Anne Graves (46) married Col. Alexander O'Reilly of the 4th Dragoons on 5 Aug. 1799. The O'Reillys bore arms. Their seat was Baltrasna, Old Castle, Co. Meath, Ireland.

He was born 23 Sept. 1781. His father was an officer in the British Army. His mother was Margaret Sibthorp, daughter of the Hon. Justice Sibthorn, whose wife was Marianne Cockrane, daughter of General Cockrane and niece of Thomas, 8th Earl of Dundonald. Col. Alexander O'Reilly was nephew to Don Manuel O'Reilly, Generalissimo of the Spanish Service and Grandee of the first class. These O'Reillys were descendants of Geldas O'Reilly, whose daughter Catherine married the son of Richard Butler, the 3rd Earl of Ormond (see Butler).

The O'Reillys are descended from Brian, King of Connaught, A.D. 981, who commanded the royal army and fell at the battle of Contarf, A.D. 1002. Arten O'Reilly was the Prince of West Brefny. The grant of East and West Brefny was granted by Queen Elizabeth in 1562. The O'Reillys of Beltrasna (Col. Alexander O'Reilly) are a branch of this family. Some of their descendants are: Alexander O'Reilly, a General in the Spanish, who in 1765 saved the life of King Charles II of England in a popular uprising in Madrid; Myles O'Reilly, D.L., of Heath House, Queens Co., m. 1830 Susan Ann Beresford, daughter of the Hon. Rev. George de la Poer Beresford, son of William Beresford, 1st Lord Decies, Archbishop of Tuam and his wife Elizabeth Fitzgibbon, sister of Lord Chancellor Clare Fitzgibbon; Col. CHILDREN OF BARTHOLOMEW W. GRAVES (35)

Henry Graves (49) was born in 1797, and died 8 Dec. 1862 at his residence in Fishergate, Preston, Lancashire, England. He married Susan Johnston on 2 Nov. 1833 in St. George's Church, Dublin, Ireland. She was daughter of Higginson Johnston, attorney of Dublin, and his wife Sarah Hutton (see Johnston, Hutton).

Henry was appointed chief executive at the formation of the Preston Banking Co. in May 1849. He occupied the bank house and this is described as being in Fishergate. He received an allowance of 40 pounds per annum for light and candles. In the book, The History of the Preston Banking Co., Mr. Graves is described as "an Irish gentleman of portly and commanding address". This book is included in a book entitled A Hundred Years of Joint Stock Banking.

Three men of this Graves family were made freemen of the City of Dublin, 1832, 1835 and 1837. They were Henry Graves of Hollybrook Park, Dublin, later of Preston, England; Robert Graves, 20 St. Stevens Green; and William Richardson Graves, Secretary of the Bank of Ireland. (R-1)

He attended Kingstown School and Woolwich Royal Military Academy, 1862, joined the Royal Artillery as Lieutenant in 1866, Indian Staff Corps, 1871, Captain 1878, Major 1886, Lt. Col. 1892, Brevet Col. 1897. He served in the Afghan War, 1879. SD (medal) Commandant, the Garhwal. Despatches 3 times, medal and 2 clasps. Decorated for the campaign on N.W. frontier of India and Tirah. No children. (British Who's Who, 1904)

Margaret Graves (53) married William Brunskill in 1809. He was a civil servant, 1784-1848. The Brunskill family lived in Stainmore, Westmoreland, England for over 300 years. Robert Southey, the poet, mentions the Brunskills of Stainmore in his poem called "Borough Bells". (R-1)

He was born 1805, died 1885. John Humber of the old Humber River family of Preston had extensive cotton mills on the Humber River. (R-1, R-2)

Catherine Graves (68) married Col. Hervey Ekins Ryves, son of Col. Ryves, 13th Bengal Lancers and grandson of General Ryves who raised the 8th Bengal Cavalry Regiment. Col. Hervey Ryves served under the Duke of Connaught's personal command at Meerut, India. The Duke was a brother of the King. Hervey Ryves commanded the 13th Duke of Connaught's Bengal Lancers. He and his wife entertained and saw a great deal of the royal pair. The Duchess of Connaught presented Catherine with a full length autographed picture of herself. The Duke escorted Catherine at affairs and Hervey escorted the Duchess. (R-1)

Edmund Johnston Graves (71) was born 3 Aug. 1847 at Fishergate, Preston, Lancashire, England. He attended Kingstown School and then Dr. Stackpoole's College (Kingstown College). He left England and emigrated to the U.S. before 1877. He married Mary Anne Horner Oughton, daughter of Walter Oughton and Mary Anne Tempset White (see Oughton, White), on 15 Oct. 1877 in the Church of the Holy Apostle, New York City, NY. (R-1)
