DESCENDANTS OF JOSHUA GREAVES, ANN HOPWOOD AND SUSANNAH FOREST OF HORSFORTH, GUISELEY & RAWDON, WEST YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Joshua Greaves (1) was probably born about 1780 in Horsley, Yorkshire, England, and died 1851-1861.  He first married Ann (or Anne) Hopwood on 21 Jan. 1802 in St. Peter’s, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  She probably died about 1831-1832.  John apparently married second  Susannah Forest (or Forrest) on 3 July 1833 in Guiseley, Yorkshire (IGI record for this marriage).  It is not proven that the Joshua of the first marriage was the same as that of the second marriage.  However, all the facts seem to fit.  The 1841 census for Guiseley, Yorkshire lists Joshua and Susannah Greaves with John Greaves, 15 (date matches closely with youngest child of Joshua’s first marriage), as the oldest child, then a gap of 9 years followed by 4 more children.  Joshua was a cloth manufacturer.  All his children were born in Rawdon, Guiseley, Yorks.

Joshua and Susannah were in the 1851 census for Rawdon, Yorkshire.  Joshua died before 1861, since Susan Greaves was head of household in the 1861 census for Idle, Yorkshire.

There is a listing in the IGI for a Joshua Greaves christened 29 April 1763 at St. Peter, Leeds, Yorks., father John Greaves.  There may be a connection.

In the following list of children, two of the sons married women with the Hargreaves surname, and Joseph may have also.  Although this is believed to be correct, it would be desirable to have more proof that these men were really the sons of Joshua Greaves.

The map on the next page shows the area about 6 miles north of Bradford where this family lived.  (R‑1)
