Rev. 29 Aug. 2005, Gen. 13
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM
GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ------
OF VA, NC, TN & KY
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) is said to have
lived in Caswell Co., NC, and perhaps also in VA, and may have died in 1822 in
Allen Co., KY. He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. Her name may have been Elizabeth Love. She was born in SC, and may have died in
1825 in Allen Co., KY. They moved to TN
from NC sometime between 1790 and 1809.
Some of the more unusual names in
this part of the family are Pelly (for a boy), Elbridge, Anderson, and Michael
(always with the initial J. for the middle name).
Some of the descendants of Capt.
Thomas Graves of VA (gen. 169) lived in Caswell Co., NC, and it is possible
that this William Graves is descended from that part of the Capt. Thomas Graves
family. It is claimed that William was
born about 1751 in Spotsylvania Co., VA, son of Solomon Graves, son of Thomas
Graves and Ann Davenport. However, the
William Graves who was a son of that Solomon Graves married Rebecca and then
Susanna, not Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.
It has also been suggested that
this William Graves is the same as the one in genealogy 37. That does not look likely.
There are still many Graves from
this family in Sumner Co., TN, and possibly in Indianapolis, IN. (R‑1, R‑2)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)
AND ELIZABETH ------
Jacob Graves (2) was born about
1780 in NC or VA[1], and died 29
Feb. 1840 in Sumner Co., TN. His estate
was settled in 1842 in Sumner Co. He
married Catherine (or Kathleen) (“Caty”) Black[2],
daughter of Michael Black, on 17 April 1809[3]
in Sumner Co., TN. She was born about
1784 in NC, and was buried in Graves Cem., Sumner Co., TN. Caty stated in an application for a land
grant for Jacob's service in the War of 1812 that she had 11 or 12 children but
couldn't remember which, as she was so old.
Jacob lived in Sumner Co., TN, and owned property adjoining that of his
brother William Graves in Sumner Co.
All their children were born in Sumner Co. (R‑3, R‑6)

1784 (or about 1790) in Caswell Co., N.C. (or in Va.), died 27 June 1860 in
Sumner Co., Tenn., and was probably buried in Clark-Mandrell Cem. He was a private in the War of 1812, and
fought in the Battle of New Orleans. He
married Catherine ("Caty") Richmond, daughter of George Richmond, on
9 April 1811 in Sumner Co., Tenn. She
was born about 1787 in Caswell Co., N.C., and was also buried in Clark-Mandrell
Cem.
Previously included in the list of
children of William and Catherine was William D. Graves, b.c. 1827, m. Eliza
Roberts. However, this person, whose
full name was William Dennis Graves, was a son of William Graves and Nancy
Lawson, from an entirely different family.
It appears that all their children
were born in Sumner Co., TN. (R‑1,
R‑2, R‑6)

William Graves (10) was born about
1812 in Sumner Co., TN, and died in 1880.
He married Adaline (or Adeline) Brackin, daughter of Wiley Brackin and
Levesta Bell, on 11 Jan. 1838 in Sumner Co., TN. She was born about 1818 in Sumner Co., and died in 1880. William and Adaline lived on land adjacent
to her father, Wiley Brackin, and most of their descendants still live nearby.
They were in the 1850 census for

32, Calvin, 10, Granville, 8, Mary A., 4, and Lydia, 3. The 1860 census for District 15, Sumner Co.,

Serelda Graves, b.c. 1850, who
married Patton Graves (#91), was given as a daughter of William and Adaline by
one source. However, this is not
supported by census data, and it is clear that she was a daughter of Allen
Graves and Keziah Ann Clark. (R‑6,
R‑7)

Alfred Graves (11) was born about
1818 and died in 1895, both in Sumner Co., TN.
He married Malissa (or Melissa) Angeline Troutt, probably called
Angeline, on 21 May 1840 in Sumner Co., TN.
She was born 6 July 1823 and died 12 Oct. 1882, both in Sumner Co.,
TN. She was a daughter of George Alfred
Troutt and Nancy Bell (9 Feb. 1805-28 June 1856), married 23 June 1821. Squire George Alfred Troutt was born 21 Feb.
1799, died 13 May 1895 (according to family record; gravestone shows 15 April
1895), and had a total of 3 wives and 19 children. His father was Michael Troutt, born Rockingham Co., Va., died
1849 in Sumner Co., Tenn. All the
children of Alfred and Malissa were born in Sumner Co., TN.
Alfred has been said to have
secondly married Julia Ballenger of Springfield, Ill., maybe in 1886. She was born 9 Oct. 1872 and died 19 Oct.
1954. This is probably not correct,
however. Note the very great age
difference, and that Alfred’s son Doctor apparently married her. (R‑3, R‑5, R‑6)

Two other children are listed by R‑6,
with no dates of birth, Catherine Graves, and Louisa Graves, m. James

Allen Graves (25) was born in Aug.
1823 and died 22 Feb. 1908. He first
married Kissi Anne (or Kissiann) Clark, called Ann in the 1860 census. She was born 3 July 1824 and died 20 Sept.
1868. He secondly married Nancy Jane
Harper, probably called Jane, on 23 Sept. 1869, solemnized by George Troutt
that day, recorded in marriage record book July 1878, p. 49, Sumner Co.
Courthouse.
Allen Graves served in Day's Co.,
Col. McKoin's 55th Tenn. Infantry, CSA.
He deserted 15 Feb. 1862 on the way back from Bowling Green, Ky. The company was composed of men from Sumner
and Macon counties, Tenn., and was reformed into the 44th Consolidated Infantry
before fighting at Shilo.
There was a daughter, Lucy S.
Graves, b. 5 June 1869, d. 20 May 1873.
this birthdate can't be correct if Kissi Anne died in 1868. Maybe Lucy S. was the same as Saranda or
Sorelda, or maybe Lucy was born in 1868?

Thomas Graves (27) was born 30 (or
3) Aug. 1830 in Sumner Co., TN, died 3 Sept. 1871, and was buried in New Hope
General (?) Baptist Church Cem., West Morland, TN. (?) He married Eliza Tuttle
(or Key?) on 19 March 1850 in Sumner Co., TN.
She was born in 1830. He was a
farmer and owned a farm.
Three of the men, George, Wilford,
and J. Morgan Graves, who married daughters of Thomas and Eliza, were sons of
Alfred Graves (#11).
The family was in the 1860 census
for District 15, Sumner Co., TN, Gallatin P.O., page 275, dwelling 845. They were in the 1870 census for District
15, Sumner Co., TN, Richland Station P.O., page 784, dwelling 60, with all
family members listed except for Catherine.
In 1880, they were in District 12, Sumner Co., TN, page 182B, dwelling
52, family 52, with Louisa (probably should be Eliza) as head of household, and
children M. Ellen, 18, Thomas, 12, and Margaret A., 10. Living in the same house in 1880, as family
53, was her son W. Robert Graves, with wife Cordelia, and children Flora and
Charlie. All family members were born
in TN.
It appears that daughter Catherine
probably died by 1770. Also, since son
G. G. Graves was in the 1870 census, age 4, but not in any subsequent census,
and Thomas Graves was in the 1880 census, age 12, but not the 1870 one, they
were almost certainly the same person.

William Graves (35) was born in
Allen Co., KY. He first married S. J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑
on 8 April 1852 in Sumner Co., TN. He
married second Nancy Ogles on 8 April 1852 in Sumner Co., TN (either this date
or the date of the first marriage is wrong.).
She was born about 1833 and died 1861-1869, both in Allen Co., KY.
It has been claimed that he married
third Elizabeth S. Lamb, daughter of ‑‑‑‑‑‑
Lamb and Perlina ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 23 April 1869,
and that they had 4 children: Lassie A. Graves, b. April 1870, Martha O.
Graves, b.c. 1871, William W. Graves, b.c. 1873, and Robert M. Graves, b.c.
1876. However, the census record does
not support this. The 1870 census lists
William Graves, father of the first child as being age 21, a match with the son
of Anderson Andrew Graves, brother of this William. Also, this William was still married to Nancy in 1880, not to
Elizabeth.
The 1860 census for Butlersville,
Allen Co., KY, dwelling 205, lists William, 32, Nancy, 23, M.F., 6, and
Lucinda, 1. The 1870 census for
District 6, Allen Co., KY, Scottsville P.O., page 256, dwelling 112, lists William,
39, Nancy, 33, Mary F., 16, Henry J., 7, George A. M., 5, Albert F., 2, and
Polley S., 7/12. The 1880 census for
District 6, New Roe, Allen Co., KY, page 254C, lists William, 49, wife Nancy,
43, and children George M., 15, Albert F., 13, Pelly S., 11, Martha J., 9, William
W., 7, and Robert M., 4. All the
children were born in KY, at least the first 3 in Allen Co., KY. He was a farmer. (R‑6)
