DESCENDANTS OF ELIJAH GRAVES OF U.S. & ONTARIO, CANADA

GENERATION 1

Elijah Graves (1) was born about 1788 in the U.S. He moved to Ontario, Canada, probably either Brantford Co. or Elgin Co. He first married Jane Gardiner. She died 8 April 1844. He secondly married Mary Axford in 1844 in Sparta, Elgin Co., Ontario. She was born in 1807 in Devonshire, England. In 1844 he was a shoemaker at Sparta.

There was also a Peter Graves, shoemaker, who got land in Southwold Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario, 3 March 1831. Could he have been a brother of Elijah? Peter was born about 1799-1800 in the U.S. (according to the 1851-52 and the 1861 censuses for Elkfrid Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario), and was naturalized as a Canadian citizen in 1841. He married Hannah Warren. There was a James Graves living about 5 miles from Peter in the 1851 census whose age and background were similar; it is possible James was a brother of Peter.

There was a Daniel Graves born in NH, possibly 1770-90, who married Mary Ferguson and settled in Ontario (genealogy 207). Daniel may or may not have been related to the others.

There was also a Franklin Clarke Graves who could have been a son of Elijah. Also, living on the same farm as Elijah in 1844 was Olive Graves who married David Ferguson 14 Oct. 1836. She may have been a daughter of Elijah.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ELIJAH GRAVES (1)

Hiram Graves (2) was born 7 June 1815 (or 8 May 1816 or 8 June 1817) in Penfield, Monroe Co., N.Y. (close to Rochester and to Lake Ontario), and died 2 April (or Aug.) 1870 at Teeterville, Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. (His tombstone gives the death date of 2 Aug. 1870 and states that he died at age 54 years, 2 months, 25 days, giving the birth date of 8 May 1816.)

He married Margaret Ferguson on 27 Aug. 1839 in Mt. Pleasant, Brant Co., Ontario. She was born 2 Feb. 1822 in Willoughby Township, Welland Co., Ontario, and died in 1913 in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. Hiram bought land in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., in 1848.

Hiram's family were said to be United Empire Loyalists who settled near Teeterville, Ontario, Canada. If that is true, then Hiram's father must have returned to the U.S. from Canada before Hiram's birth. United Empire Loyalists were those who remained loyal to England during the American Revolution, and many of them fled to Canada in the 1770's and early 1780's.

Hiram and Margaret were members of the Teeterville Baptist Church, and were buried in the United Church cemetery at Vanessa, Ontario. He was a deacon in the church. All their children except for Samuel were also buried at Vanessa. Samuel and Charity were buried at Greenwood Cem., Waterford, Ontario. All their children were born in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF HIRAM GRAVES (2) AND MARGARET FERGUSON

Frederick ("Fred") Graves (6) was born 14 July 1840 and died 8 June 1927, both in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. He married Lucy Priscilla Spruce, called Priscilla, on 26 Dec. 1865 in St. Thomas, Elgin Co., Ontario. They were married in a Wesleyan Methodist church by Rev. William W. Clark, with Ben Sanderson as a witness. She was born in 1849 in Sparta, Ontario, and was raised there by her grandmother Ferguson. Her parents were William Spruce and Harriet Ferguson. She died 28 Dec. 1905, after suffering for six months with gangrene and a gluteal abscess. Both Fred and Priscilla were buried in the Vanessa church cem., Vanessa, Ontario.

According to the 1861 census, she was living at that time with Frederick Strasser and his family. She had a sister by the name of Mary who was living with Elijah and Jane Graves in Yarmouth Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario. Elijah was born in the U.S. in 1788 and was a shoemaker in Sparta, Ontario.

Frederick and Priscilla settled on a farm in Windham Twp. on Lot 14, Concession 7. Half of the property belonged to Samuel Graves. The brothers had purchased the land on Nov. 1, 1864 from a Rev. Abraham Nelles. They lived in a log house in the woods, then cut down trees and sawed them into lumber to build a new home. Frederick spent his life hunting and farming. (R‑2)

Samuel Graves (7) was born 26 Dec. 1842 in Teeterville, Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, and died 27 March 1918 in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. He married Charity Hill. She was born 24 Sept. 1853 in Ancaster, Ont. and died in 1932. They were both buried at Greenwood Cem., Waterford, Ontario.

Charity's father was from England and her mother, Ferla, was from Ireland. Ferla lived to be 106 and used to walk 2 miles to see her son after she was 100. They used oxen for farming. (R‑1, R‑2)
