DESCENDANTS OF PARENTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND SAMUEL GRAVES OF CASWELL CO., NC

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Unknown Graves (1) may have been born about 1790-1800, based on the ages of his two probable children.  The name of his wife is not known.  It is suspected that John and Samuel were his sons because they lived next to each other in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC, all family members listed as black.  Descendants of John Graves were also living next to descendants of Samuel Graves in later censuses, indicating the possibility of a close relationship.  Also living next to them in 1880 was Emily Graves, 28, (probably wife of an absent husband or a widow of another son), her children, and her uncle Frank Lea, 56.  Maybe Emily was SolomonÕs wife, Emiline.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF ------ GRAVES (1)

John Graves (2) was born 1820-1828 in NC.  He married Fanny ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1830-1838 in NC.  They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  Ages on these and other censuses for this area (perhaps especially for former slaves) vary greatly from one census to the next, so it is sometimes difficult to be sure of correct dates.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

The 1870 census did not list Solomon and Silas, and those children havenÕt been found in Caswell Co., NC, or anywhere else in 1870.  There was a Silas Graves, b.c. 1856, son of Sidney and Maria Graves, in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC, in 1870.  However, that was another Silas, since he was still in Gilmer, NC, in 1880, listed as b.c. 1853.  No Solomon Graves was found anywhere in NC in 1870.

Samuel (ÒSamÓ) Graves (3) was born 1825-1838 in NC.  He married Lucinda Lea.  She was born about 1840-1843 in NC.  They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC, with Chloe Graves, born about 1803-1810, wifeÕs mother, living with them.  In both censuses they were living next to the family of his brother John Graves.  He was a farmer in 1870, and a carpenter and wheelwright in 1880.  All their children were born in NC.

    15.   Lucian Graves, b.c. 1874.  He may be the one who was a prisoner in the 1900 census for Simpsonville, Rockingham Co., NC.

+16.   John Graves, b.c. 1876 (or Feb. 1872), m. Lessie Marie Hester, c. 1893.

    17.   Rufus Graves, b.c. 1878.

 

 

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (2) AND FANNY ------

Silas Graves (4) was born about 1853 (or March 1857) in NC.  He married Amy ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1890 (according to the 1900 census).  If that marriage date is correct, then he must have married someone else first.  Amy was born in April 1863 in NC.  They were in the 1900 census for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  They have not been found in later censuses.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

Solomon Graves (5) was born about 1857 (or March 1852) in NC.  He first married Emiline ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1850 in NC.  They were living with his parents in 1880.  He married second Elizabeth (ÒLizzieÓ) Sergeant about 1886.  She was born in Sept. 1869 in NC.  They were in the 1900 census for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC, living next to the families of his brother Silas and his cousin Anderson Graves.  In 1900, his mother-in-law, Ellen Sergeant, 47, and his brother-in-law, William Sergeant, 14, were living with them.  They were in the 1910 census for Milton Twp., Semora Pct., Caswell Co., NC.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

Calvin Graves (7) was born in March 1860 in NC.  He married Fannie ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1894.  She was born in May 1867 in NC.  He and his family were enumerated twice in the 1900 census for Anderson Twp., Caswell Co., NC, once on June 5 and again on June 7.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

Anderson Graves (11) was born about 1865 (or Jan. 1864) in NC.  He married Sarah J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1888.  She was born in June 1874 in NC.  They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

Wesley Graves (12) was born in Sept. 1864 (or about 1866) in NC, and died 19 Jan. 1930 in Rock Creek Twp., Guilford Co., NC.  He married Fannie (or Fanny) Wade about 1894.  She was born in Aug. 1873 in NC.  They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Hightowers Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  4 of their 6 children were living in 1900, and 9 of their 13 children were living in 1910.  He was living next to his brother John in 1900.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in Caswell Co., NC.

    54.   Johnnie Lucian Graves, b.c. Feb. 1909 (or 4 Dec. 1906[1]), m. Ollie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 3 Feb. 1955 (Burlington, Alamance Co., NC).  Much information is from his death certificate.

    55.   daughter, b. 27 July 1916 (per NC Birth Index, 1800-2000, Ancestry.com).

 

Nelson Graves (13) was born in March 1862 (or about 1864, 1861, or 1868) in NC, and died 19 March 1938 in Mebane, Orange Co., NC[2].  His name was listed as Anderson in the 1870 census, but as Nelson after that.  He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Pullum about 1888.  She probably died before 1900.  He was in the 1900 census for Hightowers Twp., Caswell Co., NC, unmarried, with 3 children and his brother-in-law, Charley Pullum, age 13, living with him.  He married second Endie or Emily Curry[3] about 1904.  (Her name has also been read as Judie and Indie.)  She was born about 1878 in NC.  This was her second marriage also.  They were in the 1910 census for Bushy Fork Twp., Person Co., NC, when 3 of her 6 children were still living.  They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Cedar Grove Twp., Orange Co., NC.  He was a farm laborer in 1900 and a farmer after that.  The children by his second marriage (born 1900 to 1910) in the 1910 census were Willie Roy, Wesley and Maggie, but the 1920 census listed them as Willie Roy, Cornelia, and Luetta.  Perhaps Wesley was really Cornelia.  All their children were born in NC.  (R‑2)

    59.   Calvin Graves, b. May 1895 (or c. 1897).

    60.   Willie Roy Graves, b. 11 April 1901, m. Allie Maud ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1929, d. 10 Oct. 1959 (Bush Fork, Person Co., NC)[5].  She was b.c. 1900 in NC.  Living next to his parents in 1930.

John Graves (16) was born about 1876 (or in Feb. or June 1872) in Caswell Co., NC, and died 2 May 1947 in Burlington, NC.  He married Lessie Marie Hester (or Lessie Robena Hester), daughter of Floyd Hester and Monie Robena Woods, about 1894.  She was born in June 1874 (or about 1877) in Hightowers Twp., Caswell Co., NC, and died 25 Sept. 1936 in Caswell Co., NC.  They were in the 1900 census for Hightowers Twp., Caswell Co., NC, when 2 of their 3 children were living.  They were in the 1910 census for Bushy Fork, Person Co., NC, when 5 of their 8 children were living.  They were in the 1920 census for Cedar Grove, Orange Co., NC.  They were in the 1930 census for Hightowers Twp., Caswell Co., NC, when their last 3 children were still living at home.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.  (R‑1, R‑2)

[1] His death certificate gives his date of birth as 4 Dec. 1906 in Caswell Co., NC, but the 1910 census gives his age as 1 year 4 months, so the 1909 date of birth is much more likely, although 4 Dec. 1908 is a possibility.
