CHILDREN OF
BURAL GRAVES (7) AND HENRIETTA ------
William Marshall
Graves (25), called Marshall, was born 4 March 1865 in NC. He married Maggie Elizabeth Graves,
daughter of Gabriel Graves and Edith Carr. (See genealogy 22 for more information about that
family.) She was born 22 Dec. 1867
in Caswell Co., NC. Marshall
believed in a father-dominated family with the wife and daughters being
subservient. The sons provided the
labor for their father's farm operation and later became business partners in
his sawmill operation. The strong
religious influence in the family may have led two of the sons, Gabriel and
Henry, to become ministers. They
both were active in leadership roles in Graves Chapel, as was their father
Marshall. They were in the 1900
census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC.
They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Anderson Twp., Caswell Co.,
NC. All their children were born
in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC.
From a family page
sent by Mrs. Gladys G. Blackman (R‑4), the following comments are
excerpted. ÒSome have assumed and
passed on in earlier family ancestry writings relative to the history of
William Marshall (family and friends referred to him by his middle name,
Marshall) and his family that Marshall, along with his parents and older
brother Henry[1], were freed
by proclamation of General John M. Schofield, early in May 1863 (which followed
the Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863). However, when carefully questioned about the history of
slavery specific to William Marshall Graves, MarshallÕs son Gabriel Parker Graves
shared different information.
According to what he told his youngest daughter, Gabriel ParkerÕs father
(William Marshall Graves) was freed from slavery when William Marshall was nine
years old – around 1872.
This history fits in with the many occurrences of continued slavery
beyond the declaration of freedom.
This continuation of enslavement occurred either through the force of
resisting, rebellious slave-masters who were determined not to concede to their
loss; or, it continued through the consenting/free-choice of slaves who
were aware at some level of their newly granted emancipated status. The latter occurred frequently when the
slaves/slave-family labored under the servitude of a kindly or very
benevolent-type master; and/or the slave(s) was functionally unable to
immediately secure adequate socio-economic support systems for themselves/their
families in practice, to emancipate themselves/their families. It is to be remembered that the
declaration of the slavesÕ freedom came about quite unplanned/impromptu as a
result of the Union winning the war against a longstanding system of human
enslavement. There was no real
planning for and prior establishment of a formalized and organized system
deemed supportive and conducive to the impromptu/unprepared/unplanned
emancipation of a multitude of penniless, often uneducated, often
frightened men, women, and children of all ages. These were people who, for years, most likely their entire
lifetime, had been intentionally socialized and often brutally conditioned/brainwashed
into passivity and dependency.
These were the people being released from slavery into a new
legal status of civil liberties --- a status having very frightening,
attendant, self-reliance/self-responsibility expectations! This was most commonly their mindset
and life-conditions.Ó
ÒLittle is known
about MarshallÕs ancestry except that MarshallÕs father (Bural
Graves) had five brothers and three sisters, Eshman,
Silence, Iverson, Joe, Sam, Mary J., Margaret, and Joyce Graves. We know that Iverson fought in the
Civil War. Having married
Henrietta, the couple bore two Children - William Marshall and Henry
Graves. Not much is known of
MarshallÕs mother, Henrietta, or about her family.Ó
ÒMarshall grew up
on the farm and, along with his parents and his single sibling, Henry, was
employed as a laborer by their former slave-owners, Lee and Dock Graves. He attended Martin School, later named
Fitch School, located on Old Highway 62 South, Yanceyville, NC. His parents taught their sons the
importance of working hard to earn a living and instilled in them a deep faith
in and reverence for God. Both
parents died before Marshall reached adulthood. Henry, older than Marshall, died before reaching
adulthood. He left no
descendants. Marshall, a minor,
was left an orphan. As family ties
were strong, his aunt Susan Graves (perhaps his motherÕs sister) provided a
home for Marshall.Ó (R‑1, R‑3)

[1] The 1870 census lists William as 3 and Henry as 1, which would make Henry younger, but perhaps that is an error.
