Rev. 28 9 Feb. 2011, Gen. 32
DESCENDANTS OF CAMPBELL
GRAVES OF VA AND GILES CO., TN
GENERATION 1
Campbell Graves (1) was born about
1801 in VA, and died about 30 July 1865 in Limestone Co., AL. He was not listed in the 1820 census,
but he was in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses in Giles Co., TN and the 1860
census in Limestone Co., AL. It is
suspected that Campbell Graves and John Mims Graves are related, perhaps
brothers, but no proof has been found (see genealogy 82). The facts that John Mims Graves' mother
was a Campbell, Ann Campbell's grandmother was a Crockett, and Campbell Graves
had a son named Crockett all give support to the idea of Campbell and John Mims
Graves being brothers. It is
likely that Campbell Graves was a son of John Graves and Ann Campbell (gen.
82).
The 1850 census showed Campbell
Graves born about 1801 in VA.
There was no wife listed with the family at this time, but children John
(#6) through Edwin A. (#12) were listed as still at home. Based on this information, it appears
his wife died between 1846 and 1850.
All his children were born in Giles Co., TN.
The name of his first wife is
unknown. He married second Mary
(ÒPollyÓ) ‑‑‑‑‑‑after 9 Nov. 1850, the date
of the 1850 census. She was born
about 1811 in TN, and died after 1870.
This family was recorded on the 1860 census in Limestone Co., AL. Polly and her children Ralph and Mary
were recorded on the 1870 census in Limestone Co., AL; her children were born
in TN.
It seems likely that Campbell
Graves was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves, 1608 settler in Jamestown, VA,
through the part of that family that moved from VA to Granville Co., NC, some
of whom moved to Giles Co., TN. In
addition to living in the same places, the name Ralph Graves is common in the
Granville Co. line.
According to R‑1, Campbell
was a preacher in Athens, Limestone Co., AL. He and Mary sold two lots of land to the Central Southern
Railroad Company on 3 June 1859 according to the Giles Co. TN Deed Book Y, p.
576. At the end of the Civil War
in July of 1866, he had a horse stolen by Athens resident, Mr. Moore, and was
physically hurt in trying to get it back.
Campbell reportedly went to Òthe YankeesÓ for help in getting his horse
back and Mr. Moore was sent to prison in Nashville for several years. This reportedly angered his neighbors
and Campbell was found dead in the road with two bullet holes in his
forehead. (R‑1, R‑4)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF CAMPBELL GRAVES (1)
Martha Graves (2) was born about
1826 in Giles Co., TN. She married
Andrew Nichols, descendant of Samuel Nuckols. He was born about 1815 in TN, and died after 1850 in Giles
Co., TN. Their children were born
in Giles Co. (R‑1)

15. James Nichols, b. 1835.
16. Sarah Nichols, b. 1837.
17. Nancy Nichols, b. 1844.
Alcy Caroline
Graves (4), probably called Caroline[1],
was born Dec. 1829 in Bethel, Giles Co., TN, and died 28 April 1910 near
Pulaski, Giles Co., TN (or Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL per R‑1). She married Henry M. C. Abernathy, son
of Matthew Abernathy and Elizabeth Jackson Dickson, on 25 Dec. 1852 by C. H.
Lambeth, J.P. in Giles Co., TN. He
was born about 1832 in Athens, Limestone Co., AL, and died before 1900 in Giles
Co., TN. He is listed as Minister
of Gospel in the 1880 Giles Co., TN census.
Henry M.
AbernathyÕs ancestry is traced back to Robert Abernethe, b.c. 1630, probably in
Abernethy, near Stirling at Perth, Scotland. Robert was transported to the colony of Virginia at Charles
City Co. in 1651 by Cromwell following the rebellion because he was an
officer. Regular soldiers were
allowed to return to their Scottish homes after they swore allegiance. Robert married Sarah (Cubishe) Coppage,
daughter of one of the early settlers, around 1657 in VA.
A Florence
newspaper article dated Friday 6 May 1910 submitted by R‑1 reads: ÒMrs. A. C. Abernathy, an aged lady of
82, died Thursday afternoon last week, at the home of her son, John F.
Abernathy, in East Florence. She
had been an invalid for many years.
She was the mother of J. F. and William Abernathy and Mrs. Virgil Pope,
all of Florence. The body was
taken to Bethel, Tenn., for interment.Ó
They were in the
1870 census for Colbert Co., AL.
The 1880 census for Giles Co., TN, lists Henry Abernathy, 49, born AL,
Caroline, 49, born TN, Elvis Alamo Abernathy, grandson, 4, born AL, Walter
Abernathy, grandson, 3, born AL, Olna Abernathy, granddaughter, 1, born AL
(grandchildren belong to son, Robert C. Abernathy, and his wife Rachel). He was a manager on the railroad in
1870, and a minister of the gospel in 1880.
The 1900 census for
Giles Co., TN[2], lists John
F. Abernathy, born Oct. 1868, MS, age 31, (widowed mother) Caroline (Graves)
Abernathy, born Dec. 1829, age 70, born TN (widowed sister) Mattie J. Pope,
born June 1857, age 42, born AL, (uncle) William Graves, born Sept. 1830, age
69, born TN.
According to R‑1,
the estate settlement of 1870 Limestone Co., AL, proves CampbellÕs childrenÕs
names and second wifeÕs name, Mary.

GENERATION 3
CHILDREN OF ALCY C. GRAVES (4)
AND HENRY ABERNATHY
Robert Campbell
(ÒBobÓ) Abernathy (18) was born 18 Aug. 1854[3]
in AL, died 19 Oct. 1919 in Lawrence Co., TN, and was buried in Old Methodist
Cem., Ethridge, Lawrence Co., TN.
He first married Rachel Henrietta Ryland on 10 Dec. 1874. She was born 31 Dec. 1853, and died before
1883 in Lawrence Co., TN. She was
the mother of all his children.
He married second
Dovey Morier Ioway White, daughter of Carr Bailey White and Martha Warren, on 9
Jan. 1889. She was born 18 Dec.
1855 in Mulberry, Lincoln Co., TN, died 16 March 1946 in Ethridge, Lawrence
Co., TN, and was buried in Old Methodist Cem., Ethridge. She had first married Columbus
Lafayette Thomas, born 25 Sept. 1855 in TN, died 11 March 1884 in TN, son of
David Thomas and Mary E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, who was in
the 1870 census for Giles Co., TN, living with his parents. Robert and Dovey had one child that
died in infancy.
It has been said
that Elvis and Walter were children of Dovey by her previous marriage to
Columbus Thomas. However, that is
clearly not correct since the 1880 census for Giles Co., TN showed Columbus and
Dovey with no children. Robert and
Rachel were in the 1880 census for Giles Co., TN, living with his parents, with
their children Elvis, Walter and Olny living with them.
The Claude
Abernathy listed as a son of Robert C. Abernathy in the 1900 census was
actually step-son Walter Claude Thomas, born 26 Jan. 1883, died 18 July 1948,
son of Dovey and her first husband.
Robert and Dovey were in the 1910 census for District 3, Lawrence Co.,
TN, with her listed as Maria D. I. Abernathy, and no children living with them;
1 of her 2 children was still living.

J. Abernathy (19) was born 2 June 1857, died 12 March 1932, and was buried in
Florence Cem., all in Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. She married ‑‑‑‑‑‑
Pope. According to a 1910
newspaper obituary for MattieÕs mother, the name of MattieÕs husband was
Virgil. However, it appears that
he may have been Charles Albert Pope, born 2 July 1867 in IL, died 2 July 1944
in Tulsa, OK, son of Theodore Piro Pope and Margaret Eliza Walden. Charles married second Eliza H. Baker,
and married third Minnie Elizabeth Roberts in 1914.
The 1880 census for
Giles Co., TN, showed Mattie living with her parents, divorced, with her son
Virgil. Mattie and her son Virgil
were in the 1910 census for Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL, in the household of
her brother John F. Abernathy, with her 82-year-old mother living with them (6
of her 9 children still living).
