GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) is said to have
lived in Caswell Co., NC, and perhaps also in VA, and may have died in 1822 in
Allen Co., KY. He married
Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. Her name may have been Elizabeth Love. She was born in SC, and may have died
in 1825 in Allen Co., KY. They
moved to TN from NC sometime between 1790 and 1809.
Some of the more unusual names in
this part of the family are Pelly (for a boy), Elbridge, Anderson, and Michael
(always with the initial J. for the middle name).
Some of the descendants of Capt.
Thomas Graves of VA (gen. 169) lived in Caswell Co., NC, and it is possible
that this William Graves is descended from that part of the Capt. Thomas Graves
family. It is claimed that William
was born about 1751 in Spotsylvania Co., VA, son of Solomon Graves, son of
Thomas Graves and Ann Davenport.
However, the William Graves who was a son of that Solomon Graves married
Rebecca and then Susanna, not Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.
It has also been suggested that
this William Graves is the same as the one in genealogy 37. That does not look likely.
There are still many Graves from
this family in Sumner Co., TN, and possibly in Indianapolis, IN. (R‑1, R‑2)

Jacob Graves (2) was born about
1780 in NC or VA[1], and died 29
Feb. 1840 in Sumner Co., TN. His
estate was settled in 1842 in Sumner Co.
He married Catherine (or Kathleen) (ÒCatyÓ) Black[2],
daughter of Michael Black, on 17 April 1809[3]
in Sumner Co., TN. She was born
about 1784 in NC, and was buried in Graves Cem., Sumner Co., TN. Caty stated in an application for a
land grant for Jacob's service in the War of 1812 that she had 11 or 12 children
but couldn't remember which, as she was so old. Jacob lived in Sumner Co., TN, and owned property adjoining
that of his brother William Graves in Sumner Co. All their children were born in Sumner Co. (R‑3, R‑6)

William Graves (3) was born 1 Oct.
1784 (or about 1790) in Caswell Co., NC (or VA), died 27 June 1860 in Sumner
Co., Tenn., and was probably buried in Clark-Mandrell Cem. He was a private in the War of 1812,
and fought in the Battle of New Orleans.
He married Catherine ("Caty") Richmond, daughter of George
Richmond, on 9 April 1811 in Sumner Co., Tenn. She was born about 1787 in Caswell Co., N.C., died after
1860, and was also buried in Clark-Mandrell Cem. This family was recorded on the 1850 census in District 15,
Sumner Co., TN; their children were born in TN. William and Catherine along with daughter Milly were
recorded on the 1860 census in District 15, Sumner Co., TN, post office
Gallatin.
Previously included in the list of
children of William and Catherine was William D. Graves, b.c. 1827, m. Eliza
Roberts. However, this person,
whose full name was William Dennis Graves, was a son of William Graves and
Nancy Lawson, from an entirely different family.
It appears that all their children
were born in Sumner Co., TN. (R‑1,

of time. According to lawsuit no.
4042, dated 1861, in the Sumner Co. Archives, Gallatin, TN, the lawsuit states
that Martha died about a year before Wiley. Wiley had about 100 acres of land located at DrakeÕs Creek,
and his estate was settled in 1865.

He deserted 15 Feb. 1862 on the way back from Bowling Green, Ky. The company was composed of men from
Sumner and Macon counties, Tenn., and was reformed into the 44th Consolidated
Infantry before fighting at Shilo.
There was a daughter, Lucy S.

Richard Calvin Graves (211) was
born about 1859 in Allen Co., KY, and died about 1890 in Warren Co., KY. He married Susan L. (or S.) Logan on 2
(or 3) Sept. 1882 in Sugar Grove, Sumner Co., TN.
It was previously thought that
Bourbon Oscar Graves was a grandson of Allendon Graves (#40) by an unknown son
who was born about 1852. BourbonÕs
descendants said that Bouron never talked about his parents because they were
killed when he was about 4 years old.
A daughter said that when the parents died in Allen Co., KY, Bourbon was
taken in by his uncle, whom they always said was Younger Graves. When Younger insisted that his two sons
become doctors, he also wanted this for Bourbon. However, Bourbon ran away and lived with others in the
community. He is listed in the
1900 census as living with a Harris family in New Roe, Allen Co. In that scenario, it was interesting
and unusual that BourbonÕs grandparents and his parents both appear to have
died when their children were very young.
However, it is now clear that at least parts of that family story arenÕt

Michael (or Marvin) Jackson
("Jack") Graves (227) was born 20 June 1857 (or 2 Nov. 1854) in Allen
Co., KY, and died 26 May 1916 in Peaster (or Weatherford), Parker Co.,
Texas. It is said that he was
swindled out of his land, causing him to commit suicide by hanging. He was buried 27 May 1916 in Zion Hill
Cem., Weatherford. (His death
certificate gave his date of death and gave his age as 62, which confirms his
date of birth as 1854; the date of birth in the family Bible seemed to be 1864,
but was very difficult to read.)
He was a farmer. He married Armanda Reumina Logan,
daughter of Robert Logan and Nancy Taylor, 25 Dec. 1884 in Sumner Co., TN. She was born 18 Sept. 1868 in
Butlersville, Allen Co., KY, and died Monday, 2 Nov. 1942 at age 71 in Yuma,
Yuma Co., Arizona, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Snailum. Her body was shipped to Weatherford,
Texas, where she was buried 2 p.m., Friday, 6 Nov. 1942, in Zion Hill Cem.
Their first 3 children were born in
Ky., near Bowling Green according to family stories, and the last 3 in
Weatherford, Texas. The family
moved to Texas in about 1895-1896 because of the Civil War. The Graves family lived "north of
the Ohio River" and the Logan family lived "south of the Ohio
River" and after the war they were never very friendly, so that is
supposedly why they moved to Texas.
Jack and Armanda settled in the
Grindstone and Zion Hill Community area.
Their last three children were born while they were living in the Zion
Hill Community. The last son died at 3 days of age and was buried in Zion Hill
Cem. near his parents. Marvin Jack
was a farmer and hard times took their toll on him. He hung himself because of ill health. His death certificate states that he
was a son of Henry Graves and a Miss White. (R‑6, R‑18)
